Serena Williams caused a mini-controversy when she celebrated winning a gold medal in the women's singles at the London Olympics with a gangster dance.

The dance, which has been referred to as a "Crip Walk," was technically more likely a "Blood Walk." Regardless, she was flogged by many for her celebration.

She’s rich enough to not have to care.
Still tacky though.

She has ‘ghettofied’ the 0lympics just as 0bama has ‘ghettofied’ the White House. And they both make our flag fall to the ground.

Do the Crips have a trademark on this dance? It was a little dance. What’s the big deal? How stupid for the press to have a boner over this.

No class arrogance.

You can take the girl out of the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out of the girl.

I’m far more disgusted by the comments on this thread, including yours, than I am over a silly celebration dance.

FTA: “I was so excited that it just came out”

I can fully understand a little dance “just coming out” at such an event.

I cannot, however, understand how a dance created by gangsters is so internalized that it “just came out.”

A slut for doing this dance-step? And, you say SHE’s the undignified fool?

My girlfriends and I were doing this same type of dance footwork back in the late 80s, and there was no “Gang Connotation” associated with it that we were aware of - at least not in the Mid-west. In fact, it reminds me of the little walk on the railing in the movie “The Breakfast Club” in many ways...

People see what they want to see - that’s the truth of this matter.

Slut!

Slut? Really? You're the one proving who has no class.

As far as Serena's dance goes, 99% of the people here would have zero idea of its origins except for all the "outrage" it has caused.

This stupid story has about as much significance as Brandi Chastain's sports bra.

I am getting sick of people criticizing people for doing things the way they want to. I doubt she was trying to glorify gangs. It was just a dance. How about Gabby Douglas hair? She is being criticized for the way she wears her hair. Who cares. Why can’t she just wear her hair the way she wants. We, on the right, cannot fall into their trap of politicizing EVERYTHING. We are not like them and we need to stop this, not further it.

That’s actually the right answer. That little dance got out of gang culture and hit the general population a long time ago. People upset about it just whiners looking for reasons to whine. Even if it was still gangsta, who gives a crap, her win she can do what she wants. People need to stop being so addicted to the sound of their own pissing and moaning, 99% of what people complain about is stupid, and the other 1% has become stupid because of the company it’s forced to keep.

This is freaking ridiculous. How many people would have known it had ANY ties to some “gang” were it not for the media making such a huge deal out of it??? Surely, my friends and I who danced in High School in the late 80s and beyond weren’t doing this type of footwork because we were in, nor did we idolize gangs! We lived in the Mid-West suburbs and didn’t know much about LA’s gangster life!

This whole controversy reminds me of the movie “Footloose” (the original), frankly... God forbid someone dance for happiness!

Calling a successful, young, American Olympian we should be proud of a "slut" because you don't like how she dances says plenty about your class. Or, should I say, lack thereof.

I think people are just sore because she grew up in a hellhole and still wiped the floor with all the kids who enjoyed country club memberships, million-dollar “tennis camps” and all the advantages traditional big tennis winners enjoy.

That is the definition of talent.

And if a lack of “class” is the new standard for diminishing someone’s amazing athletic achievement, privileged darling John McEnroe should never be allowed to show his face at a tennis court ever again.

It's actually closer to the "dougie" than it is the "crip walk", however, the "crip walk" is a dance move that has been co opted by Hip-Hip for so long that it's just a generic dance move regardless of origin. That is even if the "Crip walk" originated with the Crips which is highly debatable. A lot of groups in our culture claim to be responsible for a music type, a dance, a saying, a word, a look, etc. when they aren't at all.

At the end of the day...who really cares. Spectator sports, the Olympics, what dances someone does in victory or what precious sensibilities any of these things offend, just aren't that vital to us as a nation. There are more important things to be paying attention to than bread and circuses.

We say that we support “freedom” as conservatives.

I wish we would support the freedom of other people to enjoy themselves, as long as no harm is done.
