5 easy survival food preps
Survivalist Boards ^ | 1/23/11 | Kev

Don’t want to stockpile 1,000 pounds of dried rice and beans? Want something that taste a little better then MREs? Want something that you don’t have to worry about rotating out?

One of the main problems with stockpiling survival food preps, is that people sometimes stockpile what they do not normally eat. So the food stocks sit in a closet, expire, and have to be thrown out. In the long run its easier to stockpile what your family normally eats so rotation is handled in a natural manner.

I have a weed in my yard, red sorrel, aka sheep sorrel.

Pain in the rear. It sends it’s roots everywhere and sprouts from the roots, you practically have to dig up your yard and totally sterilize it to get rid of it.

But it is edible! The fresh leaves have a distinct lemony, citrus like flavor, it is fairly high in Vitamin C, folic acid, and 4 or 5 other critical nutrients.

So I’m torn about digging iy out and trying to destroy it and just leaving it...

“Wouldn’t a multi-vitamin do a better job than a nutritional drink. Vitamins are cheaper, take up much less storage space, and no worries with excess sugars and sodium.”

I won’t know that until I do some research.

I inspect all my cans, except for the occasional closed case purchase.

Could be that the acid in the paste eats through the can and it becomes infected somehow.

Yes, I think so.

Well I am not claiming to be a great seer or anything, but the way I see it we are facing three outcomes; The way I see it, there’s three possibilities; One a high chance that the whole mess will blow-up if ‘Bama’ looses we already see the desperation growing among his followers. Two the pressure mounts to a point ‘Bama’ go forward toward the election and ‘O’ cracks goes scorched earth and action has to be taken directly against him before the election in order to save the country and three ‘Bama’ wins and within months the man’s tyranny will reach a level that true patriots will not be able to stand.

I could be wrong, but that’s the way I see things.

Seconding that: back in the late 1980’s, my Squadron deployed to an old, shut-down Air Base in Oklahoma. The Field Mess served a hot breakfast. A buddy of mine showed me the (empty) cans of bacon and powdered eggs. They were dated 1943 and 1945, respectively. Tasted fine. . .

In the very first of the 1970s we were still eating WWII C-rations, if I recall right.

I own some C-rations in their original boxes, and I would still eat them.

I don’t have MREs in my emergency food storage. But, I do have 12 MREs with a heater in each box, in my bug out bag. That bag is only for leaving my house if a hurricane/tornado/other damages my house so I cannot stay there.

You can buy old C-rations on ebay. But they always have the disclaimer of "for collector purposes only".

I wonder if the military has ever tested these for edibility, just out of curiosity.

Funny thought: You open those cans in a dire emergency; Massive civil unrest.. No other food source, etc.. And a few of those old slapstick comedy worm things pop out and go ‘boing’!

I love MREs, although for the first couple of years, many of us thought that the C-rations were better, (MREs sucked for the first few years).

MREs last a lot longer than people think, eventually the candy will get soft and mushy, but everything else stays good.

I still have some of the LRPs which are sort of MRE like, but dehydrated, they are packed in the same type of bag.

Canned foods don’t go bad, as long as they are sealed then they are edible.

What happens is that things may change some in texture and flavor, and nutrition may fade, but they are always safe to eat.

I noticed that foods with pasta in them do not age well because the pasta changes, so I always use those products within the 2 year period or so, corn and tuna do great, and I have eaten 25 year old cabbage from a survival can that was fine.

I’m still eating tuna from 2004.

Rose hips and fuchsia berries are a good source of vitamin C also.

I had to look it up and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before. We live in the desert and it prefers moist, acidic soil and we have dry alkaline soil so it probably doesn’t grow here.

While not easy on a tight budget, we were ending up tossing too many old canned goods, so we bought one of these Shelf Reliance units.

It took a little time to set up and organize the pantry, but now we can see what we are using, replace the depleted stock, and rotate stock as we fill the rack.

They make smaller units, too.

It was interesting to see how our perceptions of what we had on hand varied from what we actually had once we got the rack set up and cleared the shelves and cupboards filling it.

Some things were in far shorter supply than we thought, some we had a lot more of than we believed.

I just can't take somebody seriously has the writing ability of a child and doesn't know the difference between "then" and "than."

A few years ago, at a church potluck, I HAD to find out who made the great-tasting “spinach”.
She led me around the side of the church and showed me....lambsquarters!
It really is that good.
