Well technically this was not the republican convention was it? This was a separate speech.
Actually, I’m always pained by that speech because it reminds me of how meaningless and infantile the baby-talk speeches we get from our pols today.
All the personal stuff about their parents’ or grandparents’ lack of education or working-class jobs. “The chance to live the American dream”, leaving the country in better condition for our kids and grandkids.
Inelegant and vapid twaddle.
And the supposed great orators on the other side aren’t any better either.
Speech was called “A TIme For Choosing” and it was given October 27, 1964 - about a week before the election. While this speech did not do a whole lot for Goldwater (he was to lose in a landslide), it did get Reagan noticed and launched his political career. He would be elected governor of California two years later and the rest is history.
It is amazing how relevant that speech is today. Not a single word needs changing.
