Walmart refuses to sell shotgun to woman, says it's 'Too much gun'

Shooting as a pastime is getting more and more popular every day. **snip** This is especially true with women, who are leading the curve as the fastest-growing segment of the market. But we still get reports of stories like this one, about Prayse Dangler, who was prohibited to buy a shotgun by her local Walmart staff—because a Mossberg 930 was too much gun for a woman.

"Yesterday at Walmart I tried to buy a shotgun to keep at the house with me when Brad is gone. We live in the heart of downtown New Albany where there is a lot of foot traffic, and we believe that me having a reliable way to protect myself and our baby when Brad isn't here is just a responsible thing to do.

"Here's the kicker though. The man behind the counter looked at me in disbelief when I pointed out the beefy Mossberg 930 Tactical weapon that Brad had researched out for me and planned on taking me out shooting to get comfortable with. The man then proceeded to interrogate me about what I wanted it for and how it would be used. He said that I didn't hold it right and that I needed 'something else better suited to you.' He put it back in the case and firmly refused to sell it—all because I am a petite young woman!

"He threatened me with the FBI and accused me of purchasing the gun for 'someone else'—namely my husband who was with me. My husband informed him that IF he was the one that would be primarily using the gun then he would have bought it himself but it was going to be mine to keep with us and practice with, so we wanted it in my name…"

Try that “too much gun” with the 11 year old girl who dropped two Messicans dumb enough to break into the home of a girl skeet champion. What happened?

Think “Pull”!

Ben Walton’s children are all a bunch of lefties. I hate that company. If you really check the prices you’ll find they gouge the hell out of people on lots of items.

What loads you shoot make a noticeable difference.

Also if you mod it with a stock that can help reduce the feel of the recoil, that makes a big difference.

If she was small it could easily be too much for her. It would be too much for some guys. If control sucks because the load is very hot and the recoil is big, it makes people not want to use it. Or over-anticipate the trigger pull and recoil.

Assuming she were buying the gun for someone else, what does the retail jockey care? It’s not like the ATFs gonna come down on them for something they couldn’t know. Something nobody possibly could know.

Or maybe the feds to come down on them. “Please hand over your security tapes. An informant says you sold something to an appropriate adult who knows other people and is physically capable of handing said product to undesirables.”

I wonder why people in genrral comply with most laws. Fear, I guess. But the government barely cracks the surface now. It could be like prohibition all over again for an awful lot if red tape had we the guts.

There’s no such thing as gouging. Unless there are legally enforceable price controls.

The managed recoil loads can make a big difference, and would probably be a better self-defense load anyway. We’re not trying to kill a deer or hit high flying geese after all.

I wonder if that's New Albany as in Columbus Ohio? We have some real winners at the Walmarts around here.

I had an old beater car that had 4 different tire widths. (Junkyard stuff I ended up with from a couple of cars) They refused to sell me 4 tires all the same size, only the exact size that was on each wheel. I asked to see the manager, but he was just as stupid as the other guy.

There were about 3 or 4 other people waiting in line, and I asked them if they really wanted someone this stupid working on THEIR car. Two of them followed me out.

At 11 my Marine brother had me shooting anything and everything he and my father owned which is an extensive collection from Antique on up. I was 5'6” but I only weighed about 100 pounds. With proper technique and placement on my shoulder I never had a problem, although, and I can't remember what caliber it was, I had a sore shoulder one day, but never admitted it!

They are quite right. Until she takes a hacksaw, and cuts the barrel down to 18.5 inches, it doesn't swing well in the house, and a hallway.

At 10 or 12 foot range, the pattern should open up to 2 or 3 inches.

A load of #4s, and the noise of racking it will notify the Bad Guy he is about to have his future modified...

New Albany, IN

They would only sell you the same sized (mis-matched) tires that were on your car? LOL. They could look up your car model on the computer and have the correct tire size in 30 seconds.

Pretty bizarre behavior by the clerk, if true.

I could understand a knowledgeable gun store owner making alternative suggestions if he felt that a particular weapon might not be suitable for a particular customer. But to refuse to sell the weapon, and threaten to sic the FBI on a customer? That’s nuttiness. You don’t even need a permit to own a shotgun in Indiana.

Of course, it’s also possible Wal-Mart has this as a policy because of fears of the gun control crowd suing them over a straw man purchase. That doesn’t get the clerk off the hook in my book, but it would mean that he was following company procedure in addition to being a crank.

The 930 Tactical already has a 18.5” barrel.

So, some guy earning $8.50 an hour refused to sell her the gun?

The clerk probably took a 3 hour mandatory gun sales course where they teach the most common tricks used in an illegal purchase.

If you're Walmart, it's heads they win, tails you lose in this drama.

Walmart won't comment because whatever it says will be twisted and tortured and thrown back in its face when a lawsuit is filed.

And if it was an illegal purchase, Walmart would have faced lawsuits from any victims injured or terrorized by the shotgun.

That’s what started it, I wanted them to look up what size came on it stock. They claimed it was store policy to only put on what they they took off. I didn’t want anyone that stupid touching my car anyhow. (And I had fun loudly proclaiming it!)

1. He is a $7.25 an hour store clerk.
2. It is not any of his business what you want it for
3. You should have told him to keep his opinions to himself and to sell you the gun or he would not have his $7.25 an hour job.

As in Fast and Furious Straw Man purchase fake.

Weird narrative to start the 2A grabbing with before 2013 but we’ll see...
