Bobby Bonilla: Smartest Man in Baseball

Readers of this blog born after 1992 might not have any idea who I am talking about, but in the late eighties he was one half of a very formidable duo along with Barry Bonds. He helped the Pirates to get to the National League Championship in 1991, ultimately losing to the Cinderella Braves team. In 1992, he signed with the Mets as a free agent for, at the time, a record amount. He signed a five year contract for $29 million. That’s when things started to go south for Bonilla.

Pretty much the opposite of the Vince Young story.

The Mets deferred his final year which allowed it to grow to this amount. I wonder what genius signed off on that deal or if they even bothered to calculate what the payments would be in 2011.

Bobby Bonilla also helped the Marlins win the World Series in 1997. In Game 7, to open the 7th inning, Bonilla walked over to the stands and had a quick chat with old Dodger pitcher Joe Black, who was sitting in the box with NL President Len Coleman.

The rest, as they say, is baseball history. Bonilla blasted a gigantic home run off of Jared Wrights first pitch.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Bob Costas barely had time to get the words "seventh inning stretch" out of his mouth before Bonilla's blast.

It happens at about 2:40 in this video:

Bonilla Home Run

Go Marlins! Whenever we go to the World Series, we WIN it!

The same geniuses who invested with Bernie Madoff.

Sports owners are really dumb, but not as dumb as the politicians willing to supply them with palatial ballparks at taxpayer expense.

Can't argue with that..BTW..lots of stories today about BIG shake-up coming in Miami...the club president is said to be out..also maybe Ozzie.

Guillen is a joke...just look at what Ventura has accomplished with a lesser White Sox club...

Yep. Pretty much the opposite of most pro athletes' stories.

I’m gonna have too throw a flag for intentional gibberish. At 8%, 5.9 bills will be worth $12.7. It will be $29 at around 22 years. That’s a five yard penalty and loss of down.

Bo Jackson is another success, he is worth far more now than when he was playing. He actually finished his degree after his pro sports days were done and now sits on the bank.

If there is a club that needs a shakeup, it’s Miami.
