New WebCams - Cumbres & Toltec RR, Chama NM
Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec RR - Yard Cams ^ | October 6, 2012 | Self

Two live web cams went on line this weekend in Chama, NM showing the train yard of the steam-powered narrow gauge RR. As of the time of this posting, the daily eastbound passenger train from Antonito, CO has just arrived and stopped at the depot. After the passengers depart, the two other live steam engines will separate the cars for servicing and arranging for Sunday's departures. All of this under blue skies and autumn fall colors.

Enjoy!

When I visited Chama in 1995, steam locomotives were being used to haul freight as well as passengers. Visiting Chama seemed like traveling through a time warp to the 1920’s.

Turns out they are having a special train leaving at 5:30 tonight for dinner and entertainment at the Pavilion at the top of the pass.

Long time ago did the Durango/Silverton narrow gauge trip(actually a couple of times), stayed at a place called The Iron Horse Inn...long ride, but it was nice.

One of the beauties of Chama is that the yard is open - no fencing and visitors can wander at will. The camera just showed a family with two children and a dog cross the tracks to the vicinity of the engine house (but they can’t go inside). Parents (and adults) are responsible for their own safety around moving locomotives and cars. Something not usually seen in the 21st century!

Yes it does - it takes a bit. Make sure your Adblock is off.

The freight cars are restored and mostly for special photo specials. They are having a special photo tour mid-month with participants coming from Europe and Asia. See the link.

Local freights carry ties and ballast for track work. The track is in better shape than many freight short lines.

Did they replace the burnt trestle?

As a poster said above, super HD resolution which is a bit too much for my older XP computer. My CPU and memory maxed out about that time, too. Of course, it could be overloaded with new viewers.

Here's something a bit different and more modern. Enjoy!

Kool! High frame rates. Now they need to stick one on the active Locomotives.

Replaced the trestle which opened in June of 2011. Never did determine the cause of the fire - a smoldering cinder wouldn’t have caused so much extensive damage. Likely an accelerant was used as the structure was completely engulfed softening and warping the steel supports. But the state fire marshal did not do an extensive investigation so the cause is listed as “undetermined.”

I saw the pics of the torched trestle. It looked like a specific attack on the structure. Creosoted ties burn in a nasty fashion.

I talked my kid into driving me up the (former) DRG&W line from Arvada to the Moffet Tunnel a week ago. Nice color. Only saw the eb Amtrak and a work train.
