LOS ANGELES (CBS) Police say a man who jumped from a four-story parking structure impaled himself on a wrought-iron fence Saturday in Lincoln Heights.
Authorities said about an hour before the unidentified man jumped, they had shooed him out of the parking structure.
The man reportedly impaled himself in the midsection.
Firefighters cut away the section of fence the man was impaled on and took him and part of the fence to a hospital after the roughly 3:40 a.m. jump, a witness told a videographer who arrived after the man was taken away.
The incident occurred at 1143 Mission Road, according to Los Angeles police Lt. Richard Thomas of the Hollenbeck Station.
The fencing was atop a roughly 6-foot wall, Thomas said.
The man was reported in critical condition Saturday afternoon.

I have a friend who fell of a roof and got stuck with a metal fencepost. He was in the hospital for nearly 6 weeks and lost his spleen.

As gory as this sounds, it’s likely the reason he wasn’t dead upon impact, jumping from four stories up.

Doesn't take much of a fall. I fell 5 ft onto a sharp rock that didn't break the skin. I lost my spleen, a kidney, broke 3 ribs and a vertabra. I spent 2 weeks in ICU and went through 17 units of blood.
Slip/falls are dangerous.

How much will it cost to fix the fence? And how much will it cost to put this waste of DNA back on the street?
I know, it's not like real people will have to pay for it...

yks. I saw a news report once where a kid about ten just tripped and fell against a short rod-iron fence with pointed posts.
The point went through he bottom jaw, palate, and out close to one eye...all the way though. It was pretty gross.
He was a brave little guy, he never cried on camera anyway, his mom was crying.
Did your friend go to the hospital with part of the fence attached? That’s what the EMTs did for this kid. I was thinking the vibrations of the cutting the metal would have hurt.
How did your friend fare? (beyond his hospital stay and spleen being removed)

My friend wasn’t left attached to the fence or anything. We did replace the fence several months later with a split rail a bit further away from the house.

I know one person who lost a spleen after falling off a horse and another who lost a kidney the same way. Wonder how many people died from falling off horses prior to modern trauma surgery.

Well, that seems better. Is that a new tool? I think what I saw was about ten years ago, I really thought they had a small hand tool the was sawing through the bars.

A good Contractor friend of mine’s 24 year old son had a accident on his Harley. Just some bruised ribs. Died of a blood clod. I drove off the rode on my Harley looking left and steering right. Totaled it, I broke four vertebra, 8 ribs, my scapula, collapsed a lung and gave myself a concussion. I’m 59 and today marks my wife’s passing. 18 months, 6 days. Why the hell am I still here? She was a much better person than me. :>(

I remember reading somewhere that it was an extremely common cause of death. Not much you could do for someone with a ruptured spleen or rib-punctured lung pre-20th century. One famous supposed "victim" was Ghengis Khan (or if you're John Kerry, "Jenjees Khhhaan").
Of course lots of things we expect to live through like childbirth or any sort of infection were commonly lethal along with diseases like cholera and typhus that are unheard of outside the pits of the third world because of modern sanitation. It's fun to ask confirmed Luddites if they would enjoy the daily dose aroma of human and animal s*** and watching some of their children die slow and pain filled deaths as a matter of course. Most of them think life back then was pristine and that Bambi was a documentary.

I met a woman who climbed into her own yard over a wrought iron fence. She slipped and was impaled in the calf of her leg and was stuck there for a long time before someone came and found her. Needless to say she walked with a limp after that.

Back in the early 70's, there was a guy that jumped from the window of one of the upper floors of Buffalo's City Hall. He landed on and was impaled on a flag pole that stood in front of the building. They had to cut the pole in half and lower him down that way since he pretty much landed perfectly centered and slid down the pole several feet.
This happened in the mid-afternoon, around the time of the Commander Tom show (which I just happened to be watching). They broke into the broadcast of this kid's show to show some video footage of the aftermath of the jumper's fine marksmanship. Needless to say, parents complained loudly to that station.
