Strange door-to-door election request - anyone else heard of this? (vanity)

Posted on 10/13/2012 6:15:17 PM PDT by AUJenn

This morning, we had a nice gentleman from the Florida GOP come by our home to greet us and ask if we had any questions about voting (we have a Romney sign in our yard and are registered Republicans). He was visiting all GOPers in the neighborhood and making sure everyone was familiar with voting precincts and offering absentee ballots. I was very impressed with his well-dressed appearance and kind manners. We saw nothing like this in 2008 and were very happy to see it.

Later this afternoon...a young man, probably around 20, came to the door and said he was working for an 'election study.' He asked if he could take our photograph next to our Romney yard sign to be 'published in a book.' My husband thought it was a strange request and said no thanks and closed the door. We thought this was very bizarre. Has anyone else encountered someone asking to do this?

“......making sure everyone was familiar with voting precincts and offering absentee ballots......”

Nothing wrong with this if he was offering APPLICATIONS for absentee ballots for you to send to your local board of elections. If he was offering actual absentee ballots, it was some sort of scam or attempt to make you think you had already voted and trick you into not going to the polls on election day.

I suspect you meant he was offering to give you the APPLICATION forms. If so, he was legit.

“Do you know if he had actual absentee ballots with him?”

I certainly wouldn’t hand some stranger my filled out absentee ballot — you don’t know whether they will throw it away, or vote for Obama using your ballot.

I meant I wouldn’t hand them my signed request for absentee ballot.

Josh Thompson said it best:

“Our houses are protected by the good Lord and a gun And you might meet ‘em both if you show up here not welcome son”

Just because there is an upcoming election, that doesn’t mean strangers are now allowed to trespass on private property. If they want to make appointments for their visits, fine, but do not show up unannounced.

“right hand hidden behind the back is VERY uncomfortable for some folks. They think you are hiding a firearm.”

I am.

Oh, and I won’t be poking them in the chest.

I have been going door to door in Virginia for the GOP. (Obama Must Be Defeated!)

They send me out with a clipboard, with a list of specific addresses to knock on - mostly solid republicans, and several already have signs out.

They give me registration forms and forms to request absentee ballots. I ask if the folks need or want these.

So the first guy seems perfectly legit.

The second one was an off the wall request that I’ve never heard of. Report for a school project? Collecting images for use in ads? Whatever, it creeps me out too.

I would be more concerned if Romney wins. The black community has already on several occasions threatened to riot if Obama is not reelected.

“But we saw him ‘taking a picture’ of an older lady down the street next to her Obama sign. Weird.”

So he’s bi/non partisan, that’s good I think.

It could be harmless, maybe he’s working up some piece he wants to write, etc. I can’t think it’s really any kind of study. But it could also be something shifty.

You were 100% correct to give him the gate.

In Michigan, the Victory Centers are pushing AV voting because the ballots are long. They are asking Romney supporters if they want to vote AV and have the request forms. The actual ballots are mailed from the clerk's office.

As far as the election study goes and picture request, I've never seen that before.

“I deliberately join these surveys to ensure that Republicans are represented and even took follow up surveys specifically for Republicans.”

Thank you!

I get annoyed with folks, here and elsewhere, who are so proud they lie to survey takers. First of all I used to take surveys and all we wanted was a person’s true opinion.

Secondly, you don’t believe the polls, but you’ve lied to them, so who’s at fault, really?

As a former survey taker of course I’ll take all surveys. And why would I lie and say what? I’m voting for Obama? I’d rather cut my throat! I’d be disgusted to even say it as a lie.

We’re in Winter Park and had the same thing. Nice guy w/ 2 sons. Thought it was alittle odd he was asking us who we’ll vote for with our Romney and Mack signs in the yard but...oh well. Hopefully he’s hitting everyone, not just those of us that appear declared.

Choice 1: Romney wins and black community riots.

Choice 2: Obama is reelected and black community does not riot.

I’ll take choice 1 every time. Let them riot and define themselves for the rest of the nation and the world.
