My wife and I are going to Costa Rica in January for 3 weeks to explore that possibility. We've been there a few times already, and love it there. Earlier this year they made it much easier for Americans to claim permanent residency status there, and they want us all to come there to retire.

We'll probably maintain a place in the US too so we can keep our citizenship here... probably in TX somewhere... that part we're still trying to decide on.

You can not loose your citizenship, other then by renouncing it.
Even my social security is direct deposited into my Philippine bank.
I have no property left in the US, and no intention of returning.
My passport was renewed through the US embassy in the Philippines.

you don’t need a residence in the US to keep your citizenship. It makes it easier for banking and voting but a lot of us don’t keep a house in the US at all.
