Don's Guns clerk ready to return to work following store shooting

An employee of Don’s Guns spent Thanksgiving surrounded by friends and family inside his home, just two months after a customer tried to kill him at a west side gun store.

“He shot at me three times, hit me once at four feet away,” said Ben Chance. “His other two bullets barely missed my head.”

Chance was at work at Don’s Guns at 3802 North Lafayette Road on September 17, when Brian Wayner emerged from the gun range with a rented weapon and stepped up to the counter to pay his bill.

“When I went to grab the gun, he yanked it back,” said Chance, “and stepped back, so I switched arms and started to reach with my left arm and he stepped back and as soon as he pointed the gun at me I had to draw mine and when he did I shot and I had no choice but to return fire.”

The video from store surveillance cameras show Wayner backing up, aiming and firing a split second before Chance fires at virtually point blank range. Wayner staggers backwards, mortally wounded twice. Chance runs to the front of the store to protect his boss Brenda Duety.

No doubt in my mind that had this perp not been shot, he would’ve tried for a high casualty rate. He’s seen pulling away from the shop owner and taking aim right at him. When you’re deranged enough to point a weapon at someone you KNOW to be armed, you’re either mentally unstable or intent on doing grave harm to a larger group of people.

The perp got what he deserved, and God bless this brave owner and his co-workers!

I never before considered what the SOP should be for returning a gun that you rent at a range. I think the best policy would be to have all rented guns inside a case and require them to be returned the same way.

“...mortally wounded twice.”

Had to re-read that sentence ending 3x. Still thinking about how that happens, exactly.

You have to have some serious issues to pull a gun on someone at the gun range..

Suicide by cop comes to mind.

I usually return them locked back/cylinder out/broken open or something. Pump-action presents a little difficulty, at home I stick a cable lock through the ones in the case.

I think you’re right on requiring a case. It would give time to react, but handguns could be tucked under clothing. Maybe have a range master inspect all guns in and out of the office.

At our local range, you’re not allowed to take any weapon off the line unless it’s A) in a case or B) visibly un-fireable (i.e. open bolt, magazine removed).

The fact this kid left the line with a loaded pistol and approached the shop owner with it would’ve been enough for me to draw on him and order him to put the weapon down.

Either shot would have been a mortal wound, I guess.

Looks like the perp’s vote is now canceled-out.

I read it as “Perp sustained two wounds, either of which would have resulted in death by itself.” What you said in different words.

Love your tagline. Have used it often to describe the choices in recent elections.

I remember Don’s Guns TV commercials from my college days. He used to say, “I don’t care if I make any money, I just love to sell guns!”
