My church brings homeless people, often including women and children, to eat and sleep at the church on Friday nights from November to March. Sometimes it’s so warm that it doesn’t seem necessary, but then there are times when the heat really matters!

We walked lower Manhattan from 23rd street down. My block had a huge residential complex with its own security. We didn’t encounter too many homeless. On the other hand, it’s always a privilege to volunteer with the kind of people who will give up a Saturday afternoon in 20-something degree weather to help out those less fortunate than themselves. I always come away touched.
