Y'all might find this interesting, showed up in the Asheville paper last week or so. Can't make it a live link due to the Gannet/Asheville media freaks:

Asheville's Biltmore House is the real-life Downton Abbey

Well, Ethel isn’t dying, it appears. Just not eating much. But, as of last nite’s episode, she’s now working for Mrs. Crawley, although she gave her kid to her ex-lover’s parents. Will be interesting to see where this character development ends up. The shocker, of course, was Sybil dying. Now THAT was unexpected. Although when you think about it, that character line had to be manipulated in a way that her husband could somehow go back to Ireland without looking like a cad. Now he can leave his new baby girl that Sybil had before doing her swan song, at Downton while he goes back to Ireland to fight the British.

And now the Bates/Anna saga is heating up again too. Now they know how Bates’ ex-wife committed suicide to make it look like Bates did it (while it was the pie that actually did it). And now a bunch of new maids/cooks/footmen to provide new story lines, with jealousies abounding everywhere. Oh what fun it all is!

I wonder if those scrumptious little mincemeat tarts are still sold in the local bakeries. I believe they had a little circle of crust in the middle of them.

Now just go ahead and get me all salivating two hours before dinner!

A couple of dainty cucumber tea sandwiches with mint mayonnaise sounds about right at the moment.

Pip, pip....

Depending on how many years this saga covers, the child will probably grow up to become a solicitor who will be appointed to the bench and will one day sit in judgement of Ethel, who went back to the streets as a prostitute, having failed as a cook and maid, and unbeknownst to him that she is his mother, he will throw her in prison in the effort to rid the lower classes of the scourge of prostitution. He will have been raised by his grandfather to detest the “low life scum” that is becoming a growing menace to society. While they are dragging her away in shackles, she will then cry out to him over her shoulder that she is his birth mother and he grew up to become cold and heartless and will burn in hell. He will have a revelation, curse his grandfather on his grandfather’s death bed for lying to him about his mother (who he believed had died) and raising him as a judgmental sob, and he will turn from his life of privilege and become a crusader for the poor.

I just started watching a few episodes ago. My brother and sister in law have been watching from the beginning. I call them and ask what is going on but your wife will fill you in. I wish I had started sooner but I have no desire to start from the beginning.

Finally got caught up on the backlog of episodes. We were away for a bit, then a new grandson, then the Superbowl. I got way behind.

I didn’t read the updates to the thread because I wanted to come to the taped episodes without knowing what happened.

So now I’m up to speed and can chime in.

Pip, pip, cheerio, all.

I don’t know why, actually. But I find Miss O’Brien a bit hot.

I too just started watching on Amazon Prime. It’s paid for itself in free shipping at Christmas and now with free streaming video. So sick of what is on tv and happy to have access to movies/tv of choice on Prime. Daughter told me to watch the Downton Abbey series and now I’m hooked. Almost through season two.

Hubby and I find ourselves wondering where our valets and our Mrs. Patmore are. Sigh...we then face the fact we must wait on our own selves :)

So you find Mrs. O'Brien a bit hot, eh?

She looks like a discontented Obama voter to me.

Have you been snowed inside Massachusetts too long?

LOL

I don't know about it being THE night, but it sure was an engrossing two hours, what with Bates taking up for Thomas and all - and the best exchange of the evening when Mrs. Crawley told the dowager "I doubt that you wouldn't mind chopping up the town butcher and feeding the pieces to the guests if it would restore your reputation", with the dowager retorting "fortunately that wasn't necessary".....

Next week is the last installment in this series - a shame.....

Sunday was a great show. I really enjoyed it. But don't agree that Thomas, after attacking an innocent, sleeping boy, should wind up with a promotion. He is nothing but trouble. The show goes overboard to be liberal.

Well, obviously Mary is pregnant. Possibly a male heir on the way after all.

I got bored with the Thomas storyline. It reminded me of the sermons our previous pastor used to preach - he drove home the point about 10 mins. in, but continued another 20 mins. anyhow. It seemed strange that Carson was so parsnickety about Ethel, but not that bothered about Thomas. Chauvinism, I guess.

I wanted to see more about turning around the abbey to pay for itself and more about Daisy, Ivy, and the two young men.

The cricket game was fun.

I worry about the mean streak Bates has and think his antics in prison will come back to bite him in time.

What was the point with that Rose girl? It seemed like a silly diversion.

I’m glad Branson is going to stick around. We need to have someone for him to take up with or maybe he’ll fall for one of the servant girls and shake life up even more.

Glad that the Ethel saga seems to be playing out in a favorable way. Violet came through in the end, getting her way, but also setting up a great arrangement for Ethel as well.

Looks like Edith might be in a dead end relationship again. Too bad. That bit reminded me of Jane Eyre.
