When you fight the law, the law usually wins.

A couple was arrested after their argument over who was the greatest guitarist of all time became so heated that Motel 6 staff was forced to call the Brook Park police.

The boyfriend was screaming on behalf of Slash, lead guitarist for Guns and Roses. The girlfriend was jumping for Eddie Van Halen, namesake of ’80s rockers Van Halen.

Just between the 2....hands down Eddie in his day. Slash is good now a days, still not a Eddie when Eddie was in his prime.

Steve Vai, Gary Moore, hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaugh, BB king Yngwe Malmsteen. Yet Yngwe Malmsteen doesn’t play with heart(IMHO) and you hear one of his licks it gets old. But he is good.

One thing that makes such a list hard is that the best musicians aren’t necessarily the best players. Some of my favorite players to listen to I could never really put up as the best raw players. They just have a real pretty sound. Guys like Gilmour, Lowell George, Gary Moore, Buck Dharma (of blue oyster cult), Roy Clark, etc. etc, were/are all good players who I could listen to all day long but I wouldn’t put them up there as “best ever”.

All wrong! My goodness, 5 million records sold to non-discerning musically illiterate public and “underrated”?! Popular crap, remember Sturgeon’s Law, or else I’ll hafta mention Hitler himself and you’ll be screaming about Godwin’s Rule. I’ve seen better guitarists playing street fairs than any of the heavy metal big hair stadium gods! Get real, folks.

Exactly. Technique isn’t everything.

The girl was correct in this case. I hope she won the argument.

I like Gary Moore and Rory Gallagher.

But I would put Jimmy Vaughn over SRV. SRV was derivative.

Check out some of the youtubes from the 2012 Van Halen tour. Eddie is killing it right now. I think sobriety agrees with him ;)

(the guitar work on A Different Kind of Truth is amazing as well. Definitely worth a listen if you are a fan of EVH)

I saw Van Halen last June. Eddie definitely still has it.

Eddie definitely still has it.

But David Lee Roth clearly has "lost it."

I’d say Chuck Berry is very underrated. But then, every butthead these days thinks real music only began late ‘60s. Kind of funny, the same time everything went to hell, yet we’re supposed to believe music is great since then and nothing before was any good, because it doesn’t have an “edge”.

Wait, what was the right answer? Segovia?

I was lucky to see Andrés Segovia perform live, in Germany, when he was 78. His entire performance was solo, with no accompaniment.

So far, no one has mentioned Bob Dunn, the great steel guitarist. My choice for the best rock guitarist would be Johnny "Guitar" Watson.
