Though meticulously planned, film's most important night of the year rarely goes off without a hitch. When you get too many of Hollywood's biggest names in a room, there's bound to be some mayhem. Here are the 10 worst Oscar moments of all time.

10. James Franco and Anne Hathaway host the Oscars

James Franco and Anne Hathaway are great actors, but the two didn’t make such great Oscar hosts in 2011. They were called “boring,” “spectacularly bad” and the like by critics across the board. The worst moment of the night came when Franco dressed up as Marilyn Monroe, pretty much guarantying that he would never again host the awards show.

9. Jack Palance shows us he can do push ups

Jack Palance had already showed the world he was the best supporting actor out there in 1992, so he decided to show off his strength when he took the Oscars stage to accept the award. He used his time in the spotlight to show he could do a one-armed push up...in fact he did several. The actor then continued with a strange, rambling speech.

8. Sacha Baron Cohen dumps ashes on Ryan Seacrest

In 2012, Sacha Baron Cohen turned up at the Academy Awards dressed as his movie character “The Dictator” and dumped gray “ashes” on everyone’s favorite red carpet host Ryan Seacrest. The “American Idol” host handled the ambush like a pro and quickly returned to his red carpet interviews.

7. Rob Lowe sings and dances with Snow White

The 1989 Oscars opener featured a beyond awkward musical number, during which Rob Lowe sung and danced alongside Eileen Bowman dressed as Snow White. The ensemble is said to have destroyed the career of its producer, Allan Carr.

6. Michael Moore gets political 2003

TINE FEY TO ANNE HATHAWAY AT THE 2013 GOLDEN GLOBES:

"Anne Hathaway, you gave a stunning performance in Les Misérables. I haven't seen you so totally alone and abandoned like that since you were onstage with James Franco at the Oscars."

What about Hattie McDaniel’s wardrobe malfunction back in 1940 ?

I found it interesting to note that every one of the “ 10 awful moments in Academy Awards history” happened in 1970 and later. The most coming since 2000. Prior to 1970 Hollywood, like the rest of America had at least some class and breeding. I think it corresponds with the decline and fall of America. Our decline started with the maturity of the Worst Generation, the children of the the Greatest Generation.

10. Cringeworthy.
9. Entertaining.
8. Hilarious!
7. Yeah, pretty silly considering hadn't he recently gotten busted banging a 16-year old (and filming it)?
6. It was great watching him get booed.
5. In 1997, he was King of the World.
4. Not awful. I always appreciated it when crazy, off-the-wall, unexpected events happened to take the boredom away from the show and give us something to talk about the next day.
3. See number 4. The stars are too well-behaved and conformist these days.
2. Yeah, this was pretty uncomfortable.
1. Wrong. The number One most awful Oscar moment was watching Dances with Wolves beat out Goodfellas for 1991's Best Picture.

Seacrest can be insufferably smug and smarmy at time, but the man is a pro at keeping the show moving at the right pace.

1991's Best Picture.

Oops. Telecast aired in '91. Awards were for 1990's films.

#9 - Better than the push-ups was his line for host and film co-star Billy Crystal: “I crap bigger than you!”

Actually it ties to 2 things:
Hollywood reporters have no memory, nobody wants to put a list out there featuring a bunch of names nobody reading the story will recognize
In 1974 the length of the broadcast jumped, it used to almost never be more than 2 1/2 hours, now it’s almost never under 3 1/2 hours. More self congratulation, more drinking, more incidents.

C.J.: They sent me two turkeys. The most photo-friendly of the two gets a Presidential pardon and a full life at a children's zoo. The runner-up gets eaten.

Bartlet: If the Oscars were like that, I'd watch.

This was one of the most notorious OSCAR moments.

David Niven gave a great line after that by dead panning :
"Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen. But isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?"

I wonder what ever happened to the streaker... was he ever arrested?

I find it odd that they left out the moment that guaranteed that I would never watch the awards again. It was back when tom Hanks got an awards for Philadelphia and went on a long tirade about how AIDS was the fault of the Reagan administration and that we didn’t do enough AIDS research, and rambled on a bunch of absolute BS.

Hell, I have trouble even watching a Hanks movie anymore. Last one I saw was probably Saving Private Ryan, and that was underwhelming.

Niven’s famous line over the streaker was “Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen... But isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?”

most folks think Jack Haley Jr instigated it on purpose for that now legendary line

I remember it well

Hope or Carson...there is no substitute

RE: In 1997, he was King of the World.

James Cameron got verbally whacked by Amy Poehler at the Golden Globes this year :

“I haven’t been following the controversy surrounding Zero Dark Thirty,” Poehler said after drawing attention to nominated director Kathryn Bigelow. “But when it comes to torture, I trust the woman who spent three years married to James Cameron.”

I saw clips of the Jack Palance and David Niven things.

But I am glad that I don't have a clue about the other events. I boycott Hollywood and the Media. If it wasn't for Rush and Levin, I wouldn't know Chris Matthews or Piers Morgan existed.

I’m of the opinion that about 0.002% of the “legitimate” films made in Hollywood in the last 70 years are even worth a bucket of warm spit.I don’t give a rat’s hindquarters what happens at the Oscars...never have, never will.

Can't agree with ya there.SPR is a genuine classic for several reasons...one of which is that it's at least loosely based on real events. It was great in spite of Hanks, not because of him.Sgt Horvath,Doc and Jackson made that film.Mellish and Caparzo were also outstanding.
