OS ANGELES (Reuters) - U.S. first lady Michelle Obama made a surprise and unprecedented appearance on Sunday's Oscars telecast when she presented the award for Best Picture, the first time a president or first lady has ever presented an Academy Award.
Appearing live on screen from the White House in Washington, almost 3,000 miles from the Oscars ceremony in Hollywood, Obama praised the work of the movie industry before announcing the Iran hostage drama "Argo" the Best Picture winner.
Wearing a silver evening dress, Obama said this year's nominated films had "made us laugh, made us weep and grip our armrests just a little bit tighter."

Saw this on F&F. Doubly glad I did not watch, and have not watched the Oscars in probably ten years. Can’t stomach it.
I particularly liked her military retinue in the background.
She is about as classy and dignified as a window women in Amsterdam.
Any absolute disgrace that she is a First Lady. The video of her dancing the other day, her and her husbands constant appearances on TV entertainment shows is not only cringe worthy, but an insult to the office and the American people.
How on earth are they getting away with it?
a fake first lady shows up at the biggest fake there is Hollywood
An actress giving an award to other actors. Perfect.
One day you're working a $350k no-show patronage hospital job in Chicago, the next you're on the Oscar stage. #AStarisBorn
Perhaps “unprecedented” but certainly not a “surprise.” I mean, Stalin used to hand out “Hero of the Soviet Union” awards to his pet film makers. Yet another step on our road to voluntarily becoming a dictatorship.
How on earth are they getting away with it?
Tacky and gosh are in with the low informed people.
Another historic “first!” Will there be no end to their greatness?
I voted for Romney.
But its good to see that some of the normally non-political or even a few liberals commenting on the inappropriateness of Moochelle’s cameo.
when’s the next party they can crash?
She probably wanted to be there but the Red Carpet walkers wouldn’t stand for the security checks.
Wasn’t a surprise to me and my wife. We predicted at least one of them would either show up or have something to do with it.
The phoniness continues.
They are bound and determined to alienate half their potential audience.
Gave up on Hollywood years ago.
I’m telling ya. Its not going to be Hill or Cuomo in 2016. Put your money on the Mooch.
The real surprise was that she did not not announce her husband won for best actor. I mean that teardrop and getting choked up at the school massacre was a pretty fine example. I wonder how he managed to do it. I mean that I hope he really was sad over it, but his fascism-promoting response of gun-grabbing leads me to believe otherwise.
I am usually somewhat interested in the Academy Awards, but this year I could not think of a single movie that stood out in 2012 as worthy of an award except perhaps the movie Courageous which Hollywood would never acknowledge even exists.
It would've been cool if Michelle Obama delivered Ben Affleck the Oscar via unmanned drone.
No surprise for me either. Hollywood and the Obamas share common ideologies and goals. Why wouldn’t they want to be seen together. They are the true 1% who subscribe to the “for thee but not for me” attitude common to all communists and dictators.
The aim is to influence behavior and promote popular ( and at the same time immoral and self-destructive) culture through the adulation of those “acting” it out on the stage or on film in this case. If you’ll forgive the now overused phrase they are indeed “putting lipstick on a pig.” All that glitters is not gold, and in this case it is rotten to the core.
And for the 40th straight year, I have missed this liberal butt kiss event. No worries.
Wonder how many wet trousers and spotted dresses there were since this phony crowd could not contain itself.
Is there ANYTHING on earth that the Obama’s think DOESN’T concern them?
The Worst Lady’s appearance was disgusting on many levels. First...shouldn’t she be in prison for something? Second...her “white person’s hair” wig is so unbecoming to this fat grifter. Third...the military “attendants” surrounding her looked as if they couldn’t get enough of her. This is our military????? Please...someone tell the nobama grifter family that they are to be unseen.
I really doubt that “Mooch” will run, really do.
Where have you heard about anyone expressing the
“inappropriateness” of Mooshie’s appearance at the Oscars.
Please provide some names-—I need to like some of these actors!
The real surprise was that they weren’t on stage as presenters. With the tax breaks that Hollywood gets they owe the politicians big time.
Worlds largest echo chamber.
How does she get away with using our servicemen (and women) to play the part of Cinderella’s footmen?
This place gets more Orwellian every day. Now we get both on TV on a constant basis.
How much did this gig cost the taxpayers I wonder?
Well,I’d like to see Mooch wind up running as the true and only nominee-—she would have NO chance of winning. However, at this point, it hardly matters:an opposition candidate from our side, wearing the (R) label is going to have infinitely MORE work to do to rescue the nation and the economy from Obama’s damage than Romney ever faced. It really doesn’t look good, no matter who runs from either party. The future is in OUR hands, folks.
Thank goodness I went to bed and missed Moochelle. But I did catch Babs singing in tribute to Marvin Hamlisch. She was a clear example of what 5 gallons of botox can do for you.
That is my biggest surprise, that she didn’t have Air Force Wookie One fly her out there to do the presenting.
I figure the reason is that Hollywood didn’t want all those Secret Service Wookie agents out there in the way.
Hogging the camera is one of Michelle’s favorite things to do.Remember when she called to tell the Photogs she was going to Target in Va.?
I am appalled at the presence of the military aides serving as a backdrop to this spectacle. Any self-respecting officer would find something else to do than to act as window-dressing for such a garish display of narcissism. Note how they pushed the girls up front with their big s#1t-eating grins and star-struck eyes. Revolting.
Apparently, the White House was throwing a full-blown Oscar party; Michelle was wearing a very expensive designer dress, and she had what looked like a dozen people dressed up like high-class movie ushers.
I think that party could have paid for at least a dozen furloughed employees.
Those were military? I thought they were dressed-up high-class theater ushers.
I believe Josef Goebbels used to be the host of the Nazi version of the Academy Awards.
Those folks were White House Social Aides, who were already at the White House last night to manage the “State Dinner” for the Governors (who are in DC for their annual meeting). White House Social Aides are a small cadre of folks, about 40 or so, from all services. They do this thing on their own time, usually after their normal working hours. Their basic function is to welcome guests to the White House, mingle and execute the plan for many of the social functions from receptions to State Dinners. I used to be one in the two Reagan administrations.
So much of a surprise that the camera were ready, the officer wait staff was there, the Oscars cut to DC.
Yep, such a freakin’ surprise it was.
They certainly look like they benefitted from the ending of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
As of tomorrow, it will be 50 straight years of missing the Oscars for me.
So much of a surprise that the cameras were ready, the officer wait staff was there, the Oscars cut to DC.
Yep, such a freakin’ surprise it was.
At least they finally stopped pretending that the "arts" media is not much else but a basic political propaganda tool for them, and that the youth is the prime target because they usually don't have enough information to form moral and economic political opinions, so they can be shaped by the media.
Why were taxpayers paying 10 people overtime to be a brocaded human backdrop while Michelle read from a card?
What was their job, there? What vital function were they performing that it was worth a couple thousand taxpayer dollars to keep them there late into the night?
so, since we already had ‘em all dressed up, we may as well treat them like stage props?
sorry. they got treated like waitstaff.
Don't insult the window-women of Amsterdam!
The hypocrisy of having a black 1st lady present the award for best picture when the category included the film Django Unchained is staggering even for the fascists in Hollywood.
