Video: The most heartbreaking play in basketball history?

With a one-point lead, 2.9 seconds to play and possession of the ball, all Hugo High School had to do was inbound the basketball and run out the clock to advance in the Oklahoma state boys’ basketball tournament.

But what followed stunned everyone.

Hugo guard Trey Johnson got confused after he received the inbounds pass and laid the ball into the wrong basket just before time expired, giving the opposing team, Millwood High, a 38-37 win Thursday night and a place in the Class 3A semifinals.

Ah, yes, “Three Seconds to Gold.” But you can’t calm that “THE most heartbreaking play.” More like several plays, if I recall, and basically amounted to cheating by referee.

That’s why they invented shot clocks, etc. You also have time outs and the ability to take the ball away. If you can’t stop them despite all that, you don’t deserve to win.

“Ohhh - One second left - Dennis Johnson steps in front of the inbounds pass and dishes to Bird for the layup - CELTICS WIN!...”

Actually, it was the other way around! Bird snatched the inbound pass and immediately hit DJ for the layup!

If that’s the case, he was looking to add to his total.

Thanks man - I’m getting old - I may even had it mixed up with: “Havliceck stole the ball! Havliceck stole the ball!”

I'm originally from Oklahoma, and I'm following the scores on the Daily Oklahoman website, so I know what's going on.

Yeah, Millwood's the Goliath of Oklahoma basketball, so that's why I'm rooting double hard for Okemah tonight.
