'DOCTOR Who bosses are lining up Matt Smiths exit for Christmas when he will regenerate into the 12th Time Lord.
Insiders say the festive special will be Matts last outing as The Doctor, after a triumphant four years in the role.
The actor has made no bones about his ambition to crack Hollywood and has filmed new movie How To Catch A Monster with Ryan Gosling, which is released next year.
Sources say bosses already have an idea of who they want to replace him, with work on the special due to get under way later in the year.
Matts contract is understood to expire in November but we understand he doesnt want it renewed.
Filming on the 50th anniversary episode, airing in November, will begin next month.'

NOOOOOOOOO! First AMY....
I have never even really seen this Doctor.
Is he any good?
Eccleston and Tennant were excellent.
I really liked Eccleston.
Smith took a while to get into the role. By his second season and since, he has become quite good.
Not really. He’s just okay.
I agree that Eccleston and Tennant were excellent. It would be great if they would bring back Eccleston.
I do not have BBC so I have not seen the progression.
I liked Eccleston in that he seemed to be a bit “common” in his demeanor.
Like a reg’lar guy.
Once they regenerate, that is it.
Or is it?
Should I know?
That is it...mostly. Occasionally, the actors will return for a one off or a special of some kind.
I agree that 9 and 10 were more satisfying than 11, but I don’t blame Matt Smith. I think he’s a fine actor (too) and just had less consistently-interesting stories given to him.
I think 9 (Eccleston) is massively underrated.
It is the most beloved British Scifi show ever, and predates Star Trek.
It is often hokey, and often brilliant.
FINALLY! I never liked Matt Smith as The Doctor.
they were supposed to only have 9 regenerations but.... its TV of course
They need to ask David Hewlitt to be the next doctor, he would do it for the love of it!
Was he the Duke of Norfolk in ‘Elizabeth’s?
If so, he looks different with hair.
Duke of Earl? Duke, Duke...
Duck of Death?
I loved Billy Piper, and I loved that sometimes she wore a Wichita Falls t-shirt.
The sci-fi writers can make anything happen.
From “Consequences”, by LoL Creme and Kevin Godley:
Mr Blint: Oh no ! - I was just telling Mrs Stapleton about the piano and the wind. I also mentioned that though my musical orientation is more Bach than Beach Boys, I do take an interest in the world of popular music. I’m something of an expert, but can be fallible. I remember being very surprised by Gene Chandler and the ‘Duke of Earl’. I never saw that as chart material. The lyrics meant little to me: ‘Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl, Duke Duke, Duke; - Duke, Duke, Duke of Earl...’
(Blint continues reciting the lyrics under the next dialogue)
Haig: Would you smile please, Mrs Stapleton?
Lulu: Smile? Me? What about?
Pepperman: Not about anything! We need documentation!
Haig: (trying to handle the camera) How do these bloody things focus?
(FX Camera shutter)
Walter: I’ve never seen her smile before - I’m not sure that I like it...
Haig: (the photo coming out of the Polaroid slips into the goldfish bowl) Sorry Roland! It seems to be developing in spite of everything...
Pepperman: You can stop smiling now Mrs Stapleton. It’s getting on my nerves!
Blint: (ending his monotonous mumbling of ‘Duke of Earl’) They didn’t grab me. On the other hand, I was the first to recognize at the ‘At the Hop’ as a chart-bound sound. You see Danny and the Juniors had a... Well, never mind. I see that I’m distracting you from your work - and me from MINE!
I adored her.
So quirky, so funny, so fearless and real.
Like “Time Crash”?
Peter Davison (the fifth Doctor) and David Tennant (10th).
Loved this comment:
“Peter Davison had a daughter, actress Georgia Moffett, who played Jenny, the Doctors clone/daughter in “The Doctor’s Daughter”. She and David Tennant got together, got married, and now have a daughter of their own.
So the Doctors daughter who played the Doctors daughter in The Doctors Daughter married the Doctor and had the Doctors daughter and the Doctors grand-daughter...
Wibbley Wobbley Timey Whimey.....stuff.”
I thought it was 12 regenerations.
Nice. And he isn’t just another skinny guy in a suit. Loved Eccleston and Tennant. Took a while to get used to Smith. Did not find the story line with Amy being infatuated with him all that believable. Totally agree with your “stepping stone” comment. Would be nice to have a doctor stick around a while!
Did I confooz that with something else?
“Brave choice, a stick of celery”
Sooooooooo, is it ‘time’ for a muslim Doctor?
don’t give them any ideas
From the wiki:
“It is first stated in The Deadly Assassin (1976) that a Time Lord can regenerate twelve times before dying (thirteen incarnations in all).”
Lord, I hope not.
A Pakistani fellow named Fasil?
Exactly! And great comment you found! :-)
They do like to change the rules as they go along!
Great line, LOL!
The other one I like is
“Eh, I’m the Doctor. I can save the universe using a kettle and some string. And look at me, I’m wearing a vegetable!”
The thought has been thrown around about a female Doctor.
I wonder where 9 came from?
Beats me! Maybe it was from a different universe.
A truly enjoyable series.
I started watching To Baker when I was a kid.
Weird. Oh well.
Best line: “Would you like a Jelly Baby?”
‘Him’panions would throw off the entire time continuum.
Tom Baker rocked
the half hour segments stank badly
The Brits certainly love their quirky references.
My obliviousness to TV shows is unsurpassed. Never watched Star Trek either, believe it or not. Did not own a TV until I was 32, and then only to watch Magnum PI and Miami Vice.
What I liked about the show back then is that it was low budget but intellectual.
Any teenage kid could aspire to a production like that..
I don’t think I had a TV until then either.
I never saw Magnum PI or Miami vice.
I did meet Tom Selleck in HI. They were shooting a scene where I was staying.
He was a regular decent guy.
