Tell us about your most disgusting experience in a restaurant
The Houston Chronicle ^ | 22 March 2013 | Cindy George

On Monday, I stepped up to the line at my trusty downtown Chipotle Mexican Grill just as the server was replenishing the sour cream. She had on one glove, but the operative hand was bare and she got a few dots of the creamy, white stuff on her palm.

Then, she LICKED it off.

I tried to play it cool and asked the server to wash her hands as she slipped on a glove covering the contamination. The transaction didn't happen, needless to say. After leaving the restaurant, I tweeted my outrage. Chipotle corporate folks responded lickety-split — in two minutes — via Twitter to say they would investigate.

They later told me privately on social media that they had viewed the entire incident (as well as my unfiltered reaction) on video.

(snip)

"There is no rule that says you have to wash your hands after handling money, especially if you're not handling money with your bare hands," Gray said. "But, we always recommend to management that people wash their hands after handling money because money is dirty."

Yes, she shouldn't have licked sour cream off of her hand. However, private correction by management should have been the order of the day, and if not corrected, then fire the girl. Now, for more important matters.

Look at the rank hypocrisy of Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant upper-level management. They drop support of the Boy Scouts because the Boy Scouts will not allow gays to be part of the organization? What gives? The practices of the homosexuality outshine licking sour cream off of one's palm like the sun outshines a candle for filthy, disease-risk, reprehensible practice in this world. Chipotle, get the beam out of your own eye before ripping the mote out of the ignorant employee's eye.

And, boy, is that money DIRTY. It sure makes one support dirty things, doesn't it, Chipotle???

I always laugh at the health department and their requirement for gloves.

Nothing abou wearing a glove mean any more than washing your hands.

You can pick your nose ,handle money, and wipe your butt with the gloves on,what is to assure keeping the gloves clean?

There’s one nearby, but I’ve never been there; my fault, as I hear it’s good food. I’m having second thoughts now. I rarely eat out anymore, anyway.

Homo vs BSA supporters? That seals it. No Chipotle for me, Eagle Scout Class of 1963.

The majority of people working public restaurants and the bog chains really have no sense of what proper cleanliness is - they think what they do is acceptable - it’s what they grew up with (or in most cases - without) - and see nothing wrong with it. Go to some of these authentic immigrate restaurants in Sterling, VA and see how they operate — kinda transports you back in time before there were standards, but yet people still go there - and then comes the food poisoning...most of the teens that work in the big chains see it as punishment - not a beginning to establish a foundation and work ethic...and the food they send out bears this...which is why I’ve stop eating out except for two family owned places that I know first hand and actually am there in the kitchen while they cook...the other places have all gone down hill in who they hire and the low quality of food they serve...it dangerous!

I think some of these idiots wearing gloves and handling money think the gloves are to keep their hands clean, not the food.

Personally, I called Chipotle onto the carpet for this fiasco with the Boy Scouts, calling it what it was, a chicken-dropping move, as when the support was promised, it was WIDELY known as to the Boy Scouts stand on letting homosexuals in to molest members. In the intervening time between the promise of support and the retraction of that support, nothing had changed.

There wasn’t a change in Chipotle’s standard, nor a change in the Boy Scouts. Withdrawing support at that point was a stunt, not ‘enforcing corporate policy.’ If the Boy Scouts had made a change in their policy, that’d be one thing. Or if Chipotle made a change in their policy - it’d be less understandable, but at least it’d be an excuse.

Instead, they pulled their support because the rump humpers decided to start harassing the company over ANY support to groups that would deny them young fresh victims. They saw the logo and went after Chipotle, and Chipotle caved.

Now, I’ve never expected Chipotle to be all full of conservative values - one glance at their menu with their ‘free range chickens’ and ‘free range pork’ kinda gives the clue that this isn’t a conservative bastion. But one thing that Chipotle has always instilled in the corporate culture - when you promise to do something, do it.

I suppose they pat themselves on the back for living up to the donation guidelines in excluding groups that disallow rump humpers membership, and here you have a conflict of policy vs promise. But the promise, up until now, has always meant more to the company.

Now I know Qdoba isn’t any better than Chipotle when it comes to polices related to rump humping, and honestly, not sure how these pro rump humping policies actually apply to providing good food (seems rather contrary to me, being how little feces are desired in food or on the hands of customers..) But at least they do not make promises of support and then pull the rug when someone sticks to their existing policy.

Joe, you’ve severely disappointed me. An honest company would have said ‘we will not provide any future support, but any existing promises of support will be honored.’

And as it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man. They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all. Likewise also as it was in the days of Lot; they ate, they drank, [interestingly, no "marriage" mentioned] they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all. Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed. Luke 17:26-30.

Jesus is coming soon.

We must remember in the meantime that Jesus loves everyone including Gays and died for every sin ever committed, homosexuality included. When he comes, however, judgment will fall on those who have refused His Son and are, therefore, not under His blood.

My worst experience, not health related but certainly a safety issue. A Denny’s in Tampa, the one on E. Fowler Av down the road from the USF campus. The crappy service was bad enough, but then we found out that reason for the slow service was a small fire in the kitchen and NOBODY had the sense to evacuate the premises and contact the FD. I called their complaint line and they were outraged.

The most disgusting episode I have ever expierienced was at a pizza restaurant my friends and I went to one evening.

Once we were taken to our table we sat and talked among ourselves about the days events at work. While talking I happened to notice a baby cockroach walking beneath the glass covering the table top.

I didn’t think much about it until another guy mentioned that there were other roaches walking along the utensils.

It only got worse from there. We began seeing the little critters walking through the wine glasses .Unfortunately for us our meal had been preordered. So within minutes if our arrival the pizza pies came out on the trays.Upon closer examination I could see the baby roaches walking along the edge of the pizza.

That did it for me.I didn’t have to pay a dime for that pizza and it was the last time we ever went to that pizza shop.

As it was I would itch every time I thought about that place.

I rarely eat out anymore, anyway.

I don't like eating out either because of the cleanliness factor. Last time I called a company was when the waitress' hands were so filthy she had black grunge under her fingernails. Many years ago there was a family owned cafe where the owner would make the most wonderful pies. One day, we saw her slicing the pies and she'd make a slice and lick the knife, make another slice and lick the knife.

As a former chef, I’ve seen much worse in some places.

I usually walk into the commercial kitchen, especially if I’m there for the first time, and have a quick look around at specific cook/food prep/ready-serve areas, before saying I was looking for the men’s restroom. Heh.

I always notify local Dept of Health of any infraction.

Don’t get out to eat much, but at an Ihop in South Carolina our three year old squeezed and popped two coffee creamers, one in each hand. It got on the wall, window, people at the next table, and the waitress. And us. Ok, maybe not too disgusting as everyone got a pretty good laugh at her reaction.

Wife and I were sitting in a very nice local Italian restaurant for an early dinner one day. Seated at the next table was a young couple with two kids running around the our table making a racket. Parents said nothing. I looked up to see if the father was going to say anything and noticed he had speared what looked like a large piece of breaded veal or chicken (about 6” in diameter) and started to eat it off the fork going around the perimeter of the veal like a six year old might do. I figured then there was no hope of having a peaceful meal.

More than 2 decades ago I was newly divorced. My ex and I went to a tax preparer to do our final joint taxes. On the way back we stopped to eat. I saw the waiter drop her plate of deep fried shrimp on the floor as he was leaving the kitchen area and put them back on her plate. I kept my mouth shut since it has been only weeks before she left for some guy she only knew 2 weeks. Through the decades that is one of the memories that still brings a smile.

1) At a mom & pop diner in rural Colorado many years ago: during our meal, the waitress climbs onto our table and stands on it to change a ceiling light bulb.

2) At a large convention banquet in southern Mississippi: Chicken Kiev slips and falls onto the floor from the large tray of dinner plates being carried by a server. Server does not see it fall, and unknowingly kicks the Chicken Kiev across the floor like a hockey puck. Another server picks up the Chicken Kiev, puts it on a plate on his tray, then serves it to another table of diners on the other side of the room.

My wife and I with another couple were in Ottawa , eating in a great pizza place. Seated in the next booth was a Muslim family , dad and 3 kids, , the mother dressed in a burka. She picked up a piece of pizza, then somewhere, just above her waist , flipped open her burka and in and then up went the pizza. She ate it with the burka in place . Three pieces of pizza , then she used a napkin to clean up under there.

We laughed about it later but at the time , everyone else stopped eating to watch.

We lived in a very small community that had one restaurant/bar. It was the only place to eat out for many miles and many years. The real estate company I worked for had an office that was part of the restaurant’s building. We noticed the mice that infested our office and made life interesting.

One time, I ordered a hamburger and it had a hair in it. When I pointed it out, the waitress pulled out the hair and said “it’s good now”. Didn’t eat there for a long time. Thought we’d try it again. Fish fry on a Friday night - cooked on the outside, frozen in the middle.

I went in to get an ice tea. It was a warm day and there were a lot of flies in the dining room. All the silverware was set out for lunch. The waitress grabbed a can of Raid and started spraying. Dead flies and bug spray was falling all over the tables and silverware.

One morning, my husband took a friend of his to the local place for breakfast. His friend started feeling kind of sick. My husband told him that breakfast there was the safest meal of the day (true) and that after a while, you built up an immunity (also true).

I was eating a salad at Rubys in Laguna Beach. When I was already halfway thru it when a cockroach nonchalantly crawled up from the bottom and out of the bowl.

I called the manager and and told him about it and he asked me, "so where's the cockroach?" I just laughed at his reply and my wife got up and paid for our meal and left.

It really didn't matter that we still had to pay, I would never had gone back anyway. It still makes me feel kind of sick when ever I think about it. I guess the manager thought I should have captured the cockroach if I expected not to pay for it...freakin' idiot!

A friend for years worked on restaurant equipment. We were going to try out a place neither of us had eaten at before. As I pulled up he said ‘go around back first’ and had me stop at their back door, he looked for a minute and said ‘Ok’ lets go in. I asked what's going on and he told me that he's never been in a restaurant that was clean in the kitchen where the area around the back door wasn't clean also. Or if the kitchen was nasty then around the backdoor would be nasty too. [HA]

I suspect they sent a “bedbug letter”.

That is, many years ago, an elderly woman took a Pullman coach trip and was severely bitten by bedbugs. So she sent a complaint letter to Pullman Company.

They sent back a letter apologizing profusely, proclaiming that such a thing had never happened before, that the entire car had been sanitized, and that those responsible had been sacked. It was supposedly signed by the company executive responsible for customer service.

But attacked to the letter with a paperclip, was a handwritten memo: “Madge, send this old b**** the bedbug letter.”
