Free Republic | April 19, 2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 04/19/2013 1:07:02 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Yes, I have seen it. Probably not this year. This year I will concentrate on growing it, and letting it naturalize. Will save some of the seed to plant areas that may need it.

I also want to try more than one variety over the next few years to see what suites me best. I actually prefer to use olive oil, peanut oil, and coconut oil - so you see my problem? No way I can grow all the oils I prefer.

On the other hand, I do like sunflower seeds a lot and sprinkle them on stir fries. So it’s all experimental at this stage for the sunflowers.

LOL!

“That was the year I learned that the plants want to live, in-spite of me, lol.”

Very well said!

I had never even seen in person a mammoth sunflower. I did not know what to expect. All summer, as they developed, I would look at them and they would just make me unreasonably happy!

That’s it, exactly. Unreasonable happiness!

It certainly seems unreasonable to the non-gardeners around me. LOL!

Yup. If you are missing one part of the Gardening Trinity, water, light, and good soil, gardening can be futile.

May we all have a perfect gardening season this year!

I’ve viewed the first two of the BBC clips you sent me. WOW! Lots I’d already run across, but also quite a bit that was new and helpful. For example, I had not known it is a good idea to gently squeeze potted seedlings’ roots before planting them to protect them from shock!

I was also intrigued to see how he put together his planting areas and figured out the color for his fence.

Thanks again. I know I will enjoy the rest of it. (Wish there were captions...a few words of the ultra British accent escaped this native Texan!)In all a real pleasure and highly relevant!

I’m a Missouri Gal, and I have the same problem with British accents and sometimes those New York Accents. LOL

a while ago someone on your gardening forum mentioned that epson salts was good for plants. I would like to try it on my plants, but don't know how much to use per plant. Did I miss it? perhaps you didn't.

I saw that, and have read it before. I can’t remember just how much you use, but it’s not much. It’s 1 tsp per gallon for indoor plants, and 1 cup per 100 sq. foot for garden start up prior to planting. A good source of magnesium sulfate.

LOL! Sometimes we have to bend our ears a little to intuit what others are saying...in more ways than one, sometimes!

I’m Canadian. Tell me the context of what he says, and I’ll translate it for you.

That’s really helpful! I’ll make a note of that if I’m not able to get the gist of whatever it is by context! THanks!

I’m so pleased! I got my large pots prepared for my container garden today! Gathered up stones for the bottoms, put in leaves, then hauled bags of potting soil over and filled them.

Gave the seedlings (some of which are a foot tall by now!) a sun bath, and also planted several replacement seeds for those that didn’t fare well.

My replacement okra has sprouted, and a couple of my tomato seeds have sprouted!

We are scheduled to have snow, sleet and freezing rain on Wednesday night and Thursday morning. So maybe by Friday or Saturday I can actually start planting.

A friend of mine at a meeting today wore a T-shirt that said, “Garden Yoga” and had pictures of a gal doing all kinds of challenging positions during the course of her gardening activities. I got a good giggle out of that this afternoon as I did my own “garden yoga!”

I finally got the beets planted. Now I got to figure out where I am going to plant the peas.
