Stonington — A Quaker Hill man was charged with reckless driving Saturday after police say he drove 139 miles per hour on Interstate 95.

Stewart V. Williams, 25, of [Adress redacted by Moi --TSR], Quaker Hill, was charged with reckless driving, greater than 85 mph.

According to State Police, Williams was traveling northbound near exit 92 when a trooper used a laser clock to read the speed of his 2012 Audi R8 at 139 miles per hour in a 65-miles-per-hour zone. Williams was stopped and taken into custody. He was released on a $500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear at GA 10 in New London on May 17.

I had a 2009 Mercedes 220cdi (diesel) - little station wagon, drove it 150 mph on the autobahn (clear, cool day, very long sight lines). Wife didn’t appreciate the speed, though the kids loved it. Normally kept it under 130 mph, what was amazing was that it was still getting 35 miles per gallon at those speeds. Didn’t accelerate quickly, but that was fine.

The R8 is essentially the same car as the Lamborghini Gallardo, except the R8 is better looking and costs $50K less.

I think it is reckless when there is a lot of traffic. About ten years ago I was southbound on I-405 between Bellevue and Renton one day in my Chrysler 300M and passing cars like they were pylons. I had my wife, my daughter and one of her friends in the car. I looked down at my speedo and I was doing 90.

I backed off.

This is one of the reasons I left Seattle for rural Kentucky. I mainly bicycle commuted the 20-40 mile round trip to whatever computer contract I was working, but I got so frustrated with the traffic in the area that I needed to leave to keep my sanity. My wife and I discovered a long time ago that I only get “assertive” with my driving as traffic increases and we are surrounded by more and more inattentive drivers.

I drove in seattle for 39 years. I saw it go from a nice place to drive to a destination to a constant battle with traffic seven days a week. And there were radar cops everywhere in areas with ridiculously low speed limits.

Now, I drive 122 miles round trip to work every day on back roads. The entire route has a speed limit of 55. In some parts I drive 70 mph with no worries, even about cops. With other parts, if I were to actually drive the speed limit I’d wrap my car around a tree.

I like it that way. No stress. I’ve been doing it almost two years and never tire of it. It’s fun.

Traffic sucks and actually creates road rage. It can also cause a stroke in a guy my age.

I did 110 on I-70 in Indiana - '72 Opel GT.

The faster I went, the better the car hugged the road.

And the tuned exhaust hummed like an organ.

I chickened out after a few seconds and let up on the gas.

did he still have his training wheels on?

168 mph in a 1978 Porsche 911 with a grey market 88 turbo engine in it on I10 headed west between Junction and El Paso. Then engine was dynoed at 408 bhp.

My foot was in it all the way and that’s all it had. At the time the speed limit was 70. Now its 85.

Took my foot of the accelerator and I instantly lost 15 mph. then went down rapidly. 100 mph felt like I could get out and walk faster.

“120 in a stock Triumph TR7 - like breaking the sound barrier, rattled like hell until 115, then smooth as silk.”

A memories... Had Bertone X9 that I got up to about 120 once. Don’t know for sure because the speedo was pegged at 140 but I know for sure I wasn’t doing 140. That that mid engine was about to explode!

I used to hit 150 in my 40 coupe when I was going with my wife and she was in college in Santa Barbara when I was going to see her on weekends.

But in 1957 the cops couldn't go over 100, didn't have radar, and no helicopters!!!

“I was only doing 70 (in a 55) when I crested the hill and was pulled over by the State Boys, otherwise I would probably still be in jail. “

hehehehe talked my way out of a ticket one time. I was on I10 headed west in an Oldsmobile Achivea rental. It was new at the time so had some guts. I was going 90 and got pulled over by a Texas State Trooper. He asked me if I knew how fast I was going. I looked at him with a straight face and said about 60. He told me I was doing 90 and I exclaimed Oh crap! This is a rental and I drive a POS 20 year old rattling pickup! It felt like I was doing about 30!

He laughed and let me off with a warning.

it had a 350 quadrajet built @ our shop.

Ah, the quadrajunk. I had a Chevy pickup with a 350 and a quadrajet on top. That thing would move. I was once behind a line of cars on a two lane highway when I saw a 308GTSi come up behind me looking for a way around the line. Once he saw a chance, he took it ... and I followed. Kept up with him with no problems and plenty left over. A few miles later, we sat side by side at a red light. Got a pretty dirty look from him as I turned right onto another road and continued my journey.

I know, I know... stop it, you are making me drool! I love the R8 (just look at the pictures on posts #131, 135) it is just way beyond my reality.

hehe

I think you can actually drive away with an R8 for less than $130,000. The only other supercar priced that low are the Maseratis, also a bargain and around long enough so that relatively affordable used models can be found.

Far better than I could ever do - about the fastest I've gone is in a 1950 Chrysler Windsor with Fan Drive. Southbound on I-95 in Howard County I had it up to 110 one evening.

One-ten in a grand vehicle like that is much better and much more glorious than 140 in a new Vette.

Exact same thing happened to me at 100mph in my 1965 289.

It wasn’t drift, though. It was more like a violent shake...

Only at night.

It never slowed me down to this day. Life is risk.

It's certainly true that everything we do involves *some* risk.People *do* slip and fall in the shower, suffer a subdural hematoma (which often requires an ER physician to drill a hole in your skull within minutes of arrival) and,all too often, die. When calculating "risk to reward" for various activities a flight on a 747 for a vacation in Italy, certainly not *completely* devoid of serious risk, beats doing 139mph on I-95 in Connecticut in *my* book.Beats it by a country mile in fact.I travel I-95 between Greater Boston and NYC regularly and I promise you that doing so at 70mph should cause a reasonable person at least a bit of anxiety.

Any time you wish to hear war stories from the ER of a large hospital that involve unwise behavior (as opposed to heart attack, stroke and cancer patients) let me know.I've got a million of 'em.
