King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden were greeted by hundreds of Delawareans as they celebrated the 375th anniversary of the New Sweden Colony, known today as the city of Wilmington.

The Swedish royals, along with Finland's Speaker of the Parliament Eero Heinäluoma, began their day in Delaware with a luncheon at the Bunea Vista Mansion in New Castle with Governor Jack Markell.

Was VP Biden there? The celebration isn’t complete unless Biden is there ...

I don’t understand why Americans give a fig about royals. I have no king but King Jesus.

Uh, not particularly concerned but these people are all relatives of a good number of Freepers ~ natural aristocracy and all of that aside, the folks in 'the Family' are more closely related to the earliest European settlers here than are many late arriving immigrants.

Besides, one of my ancestors designed that fort. Finally the king comes to take a look!

If not for Queen Isabella of Spain, Columbus would not have made his discoveries of the Americas. All of the New World explorers were financed by the crown of a European country. And it was a king who is responsible for the translation of the bible into English - a translation that stands on its own as a great work of literature, that has been the source of great literature into modern times. Royalty commissioned and supported much of the art that is the cornerstone of western civilization.
Please open your eyes.

Especially the royals of corrupt, Orwellian Sweden.

There were several translations of the Bible into English before King James had a committee produce the "authorized" version, including one Catholic translation (made by English exiles in France).

Pedro Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500 while trying to get to India--so if Columbus had never sailed, or if he had not got back safely to Europe with the news, the European discovery of the American continents would not have been long delayed. Of course there were some people in Iceland who knew about Greenland and "Vinland" but they don't seem to have been telling the rest of Europe about it.

Give Delaware back to Sweden. They can take the 3 Stalinist members of Congress and we’ll throw in Vice-Emperor Plugs as a gimme.

Talk about an over-the-top reaction. I could write books on some of the great kings in history, but that doesn’t negate the fact that I believe in the sovereignty of the individual. I believe in free people selecting their own leaders. I reject the idea of any man automatically becoming a ruler simply because he was to the manor born. The God of the Bible, the God King James ostensibly worshipped, warned Israel about having a king, but they knew better, they cried out for a king and He gave them one.

Following the luncheon, the royals headed over to the Wilmington river front where they boarded a replica ship of the Kalmar Nykel. . . .

My 13th-generation grandfather, Peter Gunnarsson Rambo, came over on the original Kalmar Nyckel, on the second voyage (1639-40), and he was one of the founders of New Sweden.

Ping to the Swedish Ping List.

Damn right. Denmark has Greenland, so why can't Sweden have Delaware? Biden can be the Prime Minister. He would probably be considered "center-right" over there.

They love King Barry, they'll love King Gustaf even more. Excuse me "Carl XVI Gustaf".

Sadly this is photoshopped, they love putting silly hats on the royal family for some reason. Swedes are weird.

Heh - Biden could be a stunt double for the old Swedish Cook from Sesame Street. “Bork, bork, bork”

And mine came over on the first voyage of the KN in 1638. He was about 18, although his actual DOB is unknown. His name was Peter Andersson. He was a crew member on the Kalmar Nykel and contemporary of Peter Rambo who stayed on in New Sweden to become the skipper of the Governor’s yacht. (The Governor established his home on an island and needed a yacht to get around the short-lived colony.) He returned to Sweden via Amsterdam to collect back wages from the company and to marry. He brought his wife back to New Sweden where they raised a son who became the patriarch of a long line of descendants, including me.

Please add me to the Swedish ping list.
