Don't know if I'd go that far, but the scene where Wiesler was with the prostitute was smokin'!
I think it is a movie making masterpiece, the best movie made in my opinion, it sure beats Citizen Kane.
Amazing movie. I had relatives (my grandfather’s entire family) behind the Wall. I cried at the end when he walked off the job.
The surveillance on the East German population by the Stasi (secret police) was relentless and pervasive. You never knew who might report you to the Stasi — one of your children, a spouse, a relative, a neighbor, a coworker. People lived in absolute fear of their government.
When the wall came down and the two Germanies were reunited, the new, unified German government opened up the Stasi records for any former East German citizen who wanted to know what his or her dossier contained. Those who looked were astounded most of the time. The smallest, most private details of one’s life was recorded in the dossier file. When the victims of the spying looked up the name of the person reporting on them to the Stasi, more than a few were shocked by the identity of the spy. At its height, fully 50 percent of East Germany spied on the other 50 percent. Chilling is a very mild word.
