I Learned .40 Handgun Ammunition Can Travel 500 Yards (Vanity)
06/02/2013

Today while I was planting the garden, a neighbor started shooting his guns. He is known to do this during the summer and for his bachelor party he and his crew shot constantly for four hours. I do not mind the noise and before today my only concern was how he could afford all the rounds he fires.

Today was different because he would shoot and then I would hear a bullet "whiz" through the air above the swamp and then thwack into the woods on the other side. This was right behind my property and I knew the bullets were ricocheting so I didn't know which way they would go next.

I live on the edge of a subdivision and his property is rural farm land. Another neighbor lady asked if it was dangerous to be in the back yard because she heard bullets in the air as well. I assumed it would be so she went in and I crossed a swamp and started whistling to get his attention. I introduced myself and told him what was happening and he wouldn't believe me. I explained to him that I didn't mind his shooting and actually appreciated that he was a gun owner but he needed to know where his bullets were landing.

I looked at his setup and all he was shooting was a Glock .40 caliber pistol, he had a berm in back that goes up to the railroad tracks and then our houses are at about a 30 degree angle from where he was standing and the barrel he was shooting at.

When I saw what he was doing I didn't think he was doing anything wrong but he would not accept that he bullets could even come close to our houses. When I got home I looked up our properties on Google Earth and found he was shooting at barrels about twenty yards from him and the barrels were about 480 yards from where the bullets hit woods.

Unless he takes some sort of corrective action, I'm going to play indoors when he starts shooting and if he hits my house I will have to call the authorities, have them extract the bullet and then we can match it up. I don't really know what else I should do.

If you want to post to FR then you can get a free account at photobucket or several other places. If you’re wanting to show your neighbor then just insert the image into MS Word or similiar and print.

Mozart Lover and I have bantered about trebouchets and pianos since the late '90s.

It's an old inside ATRW thing.

But I like the cows... That harkens back to Monty Python, and that's always appropriate, even for funeral threads.

Really? You’re gonna insult all glock owners?

> Tell him to stand in your yard while you shoot at his barrel.

If he does, he’ll see what you’re seeing.

If he refuses, then you’ve made your point.

Somewhat of a joker are we?...LOL

If you go to Google maps there is an icon next to the printer icon that will create a link that you can cut and paste for the screen that your on. This is for Disneyland Ca

The easiest thing to do is to get out a phone or camcorder when he starts shooting and record the impacts. Then gently go over to his house after shooting and show him the video. Offer to have him over while his friends and buddies are shooting. If he does come over, quietly and unobtrusively record your neighbor during his visit if it is allowed by your local laws.

Keep a copy of all videos.

Provide a copy of the “papercrete” webpage and recommend that he use it as a backstop to reduce ricochets. http://makepapercrete.com/How-Can-I-Make-Papercrete-.html. An inexpensive wall of papercrete blocks 18” front to back will stop just about any bullet.

If all else fails, make friends with a county deputy and call him when your neighbor is out shooting. Ask the deputy to convince the home owner to “improve” his property so that the bullets do not land on your property.

Up to this point, you are being nice. From here on out, you are going to be using the law and possibly pissing off your neighbor.

Find out what the county zoning says about a range on private property. If a home range is a violation of zoning, notify your zoning board and provide copies of the videos.

Speak with a lawyer about what other options you may have.

If you have any damage to your property (bullet holes in roof/walls) etc. Contact your insurance agent to both file a claim and provide a copy of the videos as well.

I’m not quite sure that the effective range of an upright piano is 500 yards.

F=M*V2.

It just depends on what numbers you plug in and can make happen.

Weigh the piano with good scales.

If you want to get somebody with deep pockets and some stroke on your side, take your information to the owner of the railroad right of way. It is illegal to shoot from or across any right of way in many states. They might be able to provide something helpful...say, a lawyer letter with hints of gathering storm clouds should he persist in any reckless illegal actions. Just a thought...

Does this idiot have a backstop?

On our property up north we built a firing range. No houses/cottages in that direction for a long ways as we have 100 acres, mostly woods. Still, there’s a backstop there. Always.

Call the authorities now. Take a look at a .40 cal ammo package and see if it does not warn of the range. Even .22 shell boxes usually warn the user that they are dangerous up to a mile. From my Lyman Reloading Handboook, 47th Ed., the factory muzzle velocity specs for .40 Smith and Wesson 155 grain jacketed hollow point manufactured by Remington or Federal is 1140 feet per second. Made by Winchester it is 1205 feet per second, or 400 yards per second. At 400 yards, its velocity will not have diminished appreciably, and the wound made by a ricocheting, yawing bullet will be truly impressive.

Your neighbor's bullets may be ricocheting off the barrels, deflected up and over the berm, and passing through your property with wounding, if not lethal force.

Unwilling to listen, consider the concerns of his neighbors, and unwilling to modify his range safety procedures, he is negligent in his responsibility to the law. If he is not willing to verify that it is not possible for bullets to leave the limits of his firing range and/or property, he is not a safe shooter.

Report him. With prejudice. Bullets hitting your house may be too late. If you don't report this, you might be also counted as negligent. IMHO

(From a safe shooter and marksman. I think experts from the bullet companies will validate what I just said. Call them for confirmation. Call your local gun shop for even further info.)

I have found that IMGUR is easier to use:

http://imgur.com/

you might consider it.

You can click and drag to put images on your account there, and when you want to post them on FR, you copy the image location.

Also, for some reason, Glock owners seem to be the stupidist bunch in terms of safety. As to that point, it has no real safety....

Kind of like how Volvo drivers tend to be more reckless?

I don’t know, I just thought it was interesting that the bullet could travel in such a weird way. Anyone know how to do a screen shot for Google Earth?

No need to do a Screen cap.
Just use the "save image as" function.

Gotta get strong on this guy. I don’t about anyone shooting either but, their backstop better be damn good.

If it ain’t. He’s got no pass to let rounds fly until it’s fixed.

Id tell him fix and maybe offer to help or it goes to the sheriff
