The 4 Types of People on Welfare Nobody Talks About
Cracked ^ | 06/06/2013 | John Cheese

What do you imagine when you hear the word "welfare"? Most of us think of a minority living in a filthy house with five kids running around while an alcoholic dad sleeps it off face down on the couch ... if there's even a dad at all. I talked in another article about the things politicians will never understand about poor people, but it's not just Washington elites who treat the poor like an alien species. Hell, I find myself thinking in "welfare queen" stereotypes, and I grew up among them.

The problem is that everyone -- from the news media to well-meaning activists -- refer to "the poor" as one group having the same problem, when in reality no two people are in the category for the same reason, and almost none fall neatly into the stereotype. Right now there are millions of people out there who are using government assistance because they are ...

That's how they get stuck in perpetual welfare. They're using 100 percent of their time, money, and efforts to maintain this level of basic life

I see this a lot at the Post Office. Tons of people spending their time filling out and mailing the forms and documentation necessary to get and stay on welfare, Food Stamps, Disability, etc.. It becomes their job.

Just getting your kid on SSI for a supposed learning disability requires a lot of hoop-jumping. Imagine, all that energy, time, and money expended in the place of working.

Obamacare, no doubt, will add to that.

70% of welfare is given to rural whites....the very ones who populate many of those seedy trailer parking lots.

50% of Welfare goes to whites.. despite the fact that whites represent 72% of the population.

Non-Hispanic Whites are now 63% of the population.

Let me put it another way:

Blacks (or African American) = 12.6% of the population, and consume 39.8% of welfare outlays.

That’s fine. I was not rejecting those stats....I was pointing out that your data about the white population being 72% was not correct.

The problem we have right now, is that our stupid local and state socialist policies controlling taxing, spending, licensing, permitting and education have created an employment mess.

my father was a welfare case worker in NYC, he’s gone now so I can’t ask him, but my guess is this is accurate.

Look, in all reality I think the anti=poverty programs HAVE saved people from hunger, etc. However, they were badly designed.in the first place and coupled with the degeneracy of the 1960s and the deliberate undermining of public education by the (basically communist) teachers unions it’s had a disasterous affect on this country,

What is your source, that is a very weird claim, on several levels.

That's because it's a lie and Ouderkirk is a lying troll.
Hope this helps.

I don’t know how your dad having been a case worker in New York City helps Ouderkirk’s nonsensical claim, but didn’t you see post 18?

"The problem we have right now, is that our stupid local and state socialist policies controlling taxing, spending, licensing, permitting and education have created an employment mess."

What has changed with local and state polices in the last 20 years? Here in TN, sales tax has gone up a little, spending has gone up some but we have a budget surplus and have cut taxes, I can't think of any dramatic changes in licensing and permitting. So what's changed?

But I will grant you, that domestic producers do bear a cost for taxes and regulations. Probably on the order of at least 10% of product costs. But we will let foreigners ship products into our country for just a 1% tariff. Our tariffs are so low that it creates an incentive to offshore production.

And what are you suggesting they eliminate? You can eliminate all local, state, and Federal taxes and regulations and you still aren't going to compete with communist China's labor wages. The tariff vs Taxes incentive is not as big as the labor wage differential, but it is yet another reason why we should raise tariffs.

My image - a well-dressed woman in a local Publix talking on an iphone while paying for a buggy full of groceries (including lots of expensive pre-prepared foods, wine, beer and cigarettes) with a food stamp card.

I don’t see the relevance of post 18, but nevermind.

What I meant about my dad was he would often make the point that, esp. living in the City, one doesn’t realize the extent of poverty in rural areas or even who is poor in the city.

I remember him saying that there were many Orthodox Jews on welfare in NYC. That if you were not “in with the in crowd” amoung that group that it was hard to get by due to their strict religious needs, such as getting home before sunset on Fridays.

I have no reason to doubt anything my dad ever told me, he was a very kindly, conservative, religious, respectful person. He had a lot of respect for his “clients”, provided they deserved that respect of course. Obviously he dealt with some “bad actors” as he would call them.

So I say these things not to insult anyone and obviously I can’t prove anything nor even speak from my own personal knowledge. But I throw in what pennies of thought I have to offer in the best spirit of debate and conversation.

You don’t get out much do you?

Do you ever wonder how all of those rural trailer park occupants pay their lot rent? Pay for their food?

There are more whites living in those trailer parks who are using SNAP cards, and HEAP nationwide than there are blacks in the cities on welfare. They are not direct “welfare” recipients, but they are receiving some form of government assistance. The biggest scam that these folks perpetrate is to have their child “classified with a learning disability” and then the qualify for AFDC and other support. They may work at the local gas station, or other small businesses for nominal wages, but they are welfare collectors just the same.

As far as direct welfare payments, whites represent about 30%, but the statistics cited above do not account for the “other” in welfare programs that are directed at the so-called working poor including EITC. The is EITC is a direct lump sum welfare payment to these people.

I stand on my comment, and the statistics for welfare transfer payments to whites are deliberately blurred by those who are buying votes with this money.

You are thinking that welfare to rural whites is the same as that doled out to blacks in the cities. It is much different.

Go into a rural grocery store, and see who pays for their food and such with cash, and who pays with an EBT. 68% of purchases are made using EBT cards. I know, because my cousin owns one of those rural grocery stores.

Of course if every company had to pay a “living wage”, all of this goes away.

If every worker contributed value in excess of a "living wage", then companies would have no problem paying a "living wage" to every worker.

Your statistics seem off. Why? Can you provide a source?

Blacks and whites are roughly equal in terms of total numbers on welfare, but blacks make up 13% of the population - so is a given black more likely to be on welfare than a given white?

There was a lady convicted in a border town in the northern part of this state that was found to have food stamp cards from FOUR DIFFERENT states.

That’s a pretty good haul. She was driving a luxury SUV when she was apprehended.

How many more, just like her?

You said that this is accurate “”70% of welfare is given to rural whites....the very ones who populate many of those seedy trailer parking lots.””.

As stupid as that hostile claim is on the surface, post 18 shows the actual facts from the current federal numbers and destroys that ridiculous claim.

That is how post 18 is relevant.

As much as you hate manufactured housing and whites that don’t live in the city, how about posting your numbers for all these claims, for instance “70% of welfare is given to rural whites....the very ones who populate many of those seedy trailer parking lots.”.
It sounds like some white guy living in a trailer beat you up or something when you were mixing with the working classes one day.

I’m sorry, I don’t know what I did before but I didn’t see the right post #18.

Also I didn’t say it WAS accurate I said it might indeed be accurate. But clearly it is not. I stand corrected as hubby says. Not too often, but sometimes he does.
