WATCH: ‘I’m Important! I’m Somebody!’ Baptist Pastor Throws Epic ‘Hissy Fit,’ Berates Churchgoers

Fun times at the Immanuel Baptist Church of Skiatook, Oklahoma.

Recent video shows pastor Jim Standridge throwing what can only be described as an uncomfortably epic hissy-fit upon discovering one of his younger churchgoers had fallen asleep during his sermon.

“Don’t you go to sleep while I’m talking?” Standridge said from his pulpit, looking directly at the snoozing churchgoer. “Hey! Hey! Don’t you lay your head back!”

“I’m important. I’m somebody,” the pastor continued as he stepped down from the pulpit and walked directly over to the unidentified sleepy male. “You may do your English teacher that way, but I’m not here teaching English. I’m teaching eternal life.” Standridge walked over to the man, stood over him, and sternly told him: “You stay awake and you listen to me.”

Instead of returning to his pulpit to continue the sermon, however, Standridge then took the opportunity to berate other churchgoers who’ve run afoul of him lately.

Maybe God was speaking to the parishioner in his dreams, and giving him a more accurate message.

No, this pastor definitely needs to get down on his knees and pray for better enlightenment.

Not in defense of this man or the member of his flock, but in defense of the young man listening to Paul, Paul’s sermon went ALL night!

I’m reminded of the story of a preacher who noted that an old fellow in the back of the congregation had nodded off during the sermon. At an appropriate place in his remarks, the pastor asked, “Will all those who want to go to Heaven, please stand up.” The congregation quickly rose to their feet, except the old man in the back who dozed peacefully. The congregation was told to sit.

The preacher then asked, “Will all those who want to go to Hell PLEASE STAND UP!” The startled old gentleman quickly rose to his feet, looked around and saw everyone seated. He looked at the pastor and replied, “I don’t know what you and I are voting on, reverend, but looks like we’re the only ones for it!”

The congregation may not walk out this week but they won’t be back next week unless the church elders send this pompous ass packing..........

A fire and brimstone preacher.
Why would anyone go to church and not expect a man of God to set them straight?
Sometimes, we need to be told when we are wrong, when we are slipping, when we fall short of tje grace of the Lord.
Who better to do it? Your mommy and daddy? The neighbor? The cops? The government?
Those of us honest with ourselves know in our hearts we are sinners and many times very much estranged from our Creator.
The preacher spoke what likely needed to be said.
The arrogant, hypocritical and smugly selfrighteous will bitch and moan and maybe leave.
Their loss. They need a shepherd. And if the shepherd must smack his flock from time to time, he is only implementing the spare the rod spoil the child proverb.

I understand that not only the two men he chastised but several others have left that church.

It is to a man’s honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.

The guy is an embarrassment.... not the guy in the pew, the preacher.

Wouldn't it have been sweet if, after being subjected to a thorough tongue-lashing, the apparently sleeping church-goer had then been discovered to have actually died only minutes before?

Had I been there and saw this Self Absorbed Pastor embarrass a young church goer to the point the young man may not go back to church. I might have taken his pulpit and berated him for his misguided chastising. Or I might have just stood up and walked out announcing I was going to go find a real pastor.

The Apostle Paul had this problem. Young dude name Eutychus fell asleep. He was sitting in the window when he dozed off, fell out the window, and broke his neck. The kid died. Paul raised him from the dead and then made him sit back in the window and preached until the sun rose.

NO one has a right to publically embarass another .. no matter the day nor reason.

Au contraire! If someone publicly embarrasses you, you have the duty to then reprimand that person, else discourteous behavior should win the day.

There is the tacit understanding that one should not fall asleep while being spoken to. In this case, the sleeper violated that tacit understanding.

Despite the miseducation of liberation theology and social justice, a lot of black pastors do a really good job of keeping their congregations engaged and actually feeling real excitement.

One of the inner city pastors I’ve befriended says that whites treat church like God’s funeral and he tries for an atmosphere like God’s birthday party. I’ve seen him in action and they could take the pews out of that church and have a bonfire for all the use they get because the people spend most of their time on their feet. They leave wide awake and invigorated with the spirit of God.

This preacher may do the same thing as Paul and raise the sleeping man from the dead.

But he would only do it in order to condemn the man to hell.

Right out of the 1950s South! I almost expected this preacher to start ranting about immoral dancing, teenage delinquency, Elvis Presley and rock and roll.

Oh, come on! That's almost like saying that people have a right not to be uncomfortable, or offended, or discomforted.
Hell, our politicians, and courts, and members of the executive have done things that should embarrass them, that should cause them to be publicly smacked-down, and punished-to-a-degree-thatis-uncomfortable.

I think you'd get a whole different set of reactions had you posted this in the Religion Forum.

I know that. Too many talking tar babies.
