AKC and VVMA Express Outrage at PETA Approach to Euthanasia in Animal Shelter
American Kennel Club ^ | AKC

Posted on 07/10/2013 1:37:00 PM PDT by Jean S

Dear Dog Lover,

The American Kennel Club® (AKC) and the Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (VVMA) have today issued statements to highlight their vehement disapproval of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)’s apparent policy of euthanizing animals frequently at its shelter in Norfolk, VA. Furthermore, the AKC has called for the PETA shelter to take steps towards balancing its adoption and euthanasia rates for dogs and cats in its shelter.

“While most shelters strive for a 90% re-homing rate, PETA is apparently proud of their 99% killing rate and callously boasts that the animals it rescues are ‘better off dead’. That is an alarming ratio that should be fully investigated. PETA’s track record is absolutely unacceptable,” said AKC Chairman Alan Kalter. “Legitimate animal shelters in America re-home most of their sheltered animals. If some of Michael Vick’s fighting dogs can be rehabilitated and re-homed then PETA can — and should — do better. If they cannot — or will not — then they should leave sheltering to others.”

“Re-homing a dog is not always the easiest but it is AKC’s preferred route. PETA’s apparent lack of commitment to re-homing is hypocritical. Our experience, through AKC clubs’ rescue network, proves that a rescued dog can often thrive if given the much-needed love, medical care, rehabilitation and responsible placement into a new home. AKC is disgusted that euthanasia is seemingly so easily employed by PETA.”

“While it is true that some animals at shelters are too physically injured or psychologically scarred to be adoptable, many of them can be successfully treated, rehabilitated and adopted, said VVMA President, Mark Finkler, D.V.M. “Veterinarians throughout Virginia work with numerous shelters and rescue groups to assist in the care of these dogs and cats. It is disappointing to hear that PETA has a different philosophy regarding the handling of these abandoned and unwanted pets."

No it isn't. PETA believes animals are better off in dignified death than alive and being "exploited" by humans.

My question:

What do they do with the bodies? Are they selling them to scientific researchers? Dissection suppliers to schools? Korean restaurants?...............

What? And let them be exploited even in death?

I remember some years ago reading an article about the woman who began PETA; and, in that article they told the reader straight out that this woman would pick up cats that she saw while walking to work, and she would kill them in her office. (I don't know what she did with the carcass.) This was the beginning of my distrust of "animal rights" organizations.

The people at PETA do not believe any animal should be kept as a pet; and, they do believe death is a better option. Now, my perfectly pampered corgi would disagree entirely. He is very fond of the food we serve at our table; from which he receives scraps.

WRKO’s Jeff Kuhner did a segment on this after his producer tried to get a Shelter Dog. He went to two shelters and the people there really don’t want you leaving with the animal. “Oh, you have kids”. “Oh, you and your wife both work”. “Oh, you don’t have a big enough back yard”. “Oh, you have relatives that have dogs that might not interact properly with this one”. Seriously, they wanted extended family and their pets to come to the shelter for interviews.

PETAphiles sound almost word for word like abortionists. And very Hitleresque to boot.

Typical leftist disregard for life. They'd do it to people, too, if they could.

Exactly, PETA does not believe in PETS, how can an animal be your pet when PETA considers it to have the exact same rights as humans.

This is why it’s so ridiculous and outrageous when FReepers on animal threads ask animal lovers and advocates of animal welfare here if they support PETA. Clearly they are unfamiliar with the history and beliefs of the organization or they wouldn’t even ask. On the face of it it is absurd. Those who work in rescue and for the benefit of animals do NOT support PETA. They KNOW what they are and the two groups have nothing in common. Guess that’s news to some here, but it shouldn’t be. PETA’s been around a long time and they have done little to disguise what they are — but now they are getting some backlash. Kind of funny that the AKC is one of the groups scolding them, considering how they look the other way when it comes to “puppy mills”.

I knew someone who was the live-in “companion” of a sadistic, controlling b*sturd who was one of the uppermost elites in PETA for an extended period of time. He was keeping some dogs on his property that were from a rescue situation. She saw him grab one of the dogs by the foreleg so forcefully that he broke the dog’s leg. Later when the two of them were visiting the home of a friend of mine, he got annoyed by their little dog and kicked it so hard in the kidneys that it had blood in its urine afterward. The guy happened to be a medical doctor!

These PETA people are a collection of freaks and sociopaths. They don’t “love” animals, they just hate people.

This is actually off topic from PETA, but I don’t have a very high regard for “rescue” groups. Most seem high and mighty from what I’ve heard.

BTW, I have truly rescued a tiny kitten. It wasn’t through no adoption group.

I hate how we commandeer words and skew their meaning.

What do they do with the bodies?

That is the reason they were originally busted. They had a mobile killing van driving around Norfolk Va picking up peoples pets and any strays they found. They would kill them immediately and dump them in apartment and business dumpsters. Nothing much as changed with them. They were busted a couple decades ago, but the killing goes on.

A good link that tracks their obamanations is Peta Kills Animals. The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is another front company for PETA (as are The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine PCRM). Watch the funny save a lawyer clip at the site. The HSUS confuses many with their slick adds syphoning money from local Humane Societies that do have no kill shelters.

These are a collection of sociopaths and truly evil people.

They already do it for the unborn (abortion) and they’re looking to expand (Obamacare).

Actually, they do. Their history of looking the other way when groups come in is legendary. Of course, they may have started changing due to a light being shown on their lax attitudes, but the charges against the AKC for “looking the other way” go wayyyyy back.

Google “AKC and puppy mills” and you’ll see a host of links between them and the mill puppies. Like I said, they are notorious for looking the other way and giving legitimacy to puppy mill dogs — thus helping to perpetuate the problem. No, they aren’t the USDA, but without their tacit approval of the animals the industry wouldn’t be able to claim “status”.

The issue of the ‘displaced misanthropic rage’ of the rescue set is a valid discussion especially regarding peta. peta doesn't actually love animals; no animal lover could possibly kill stray cats given their well known autonomy not to mention the folkloric meme of their inability to even die. A woman killing cats in her office is acting out her rage at her own abandonment by humanity. Such an act is a vicarious suicide.
Conversely, the unctuous , simpering adoration of ‘abandoned pets by ‘rescuers’belies their own repressed misanthropic bent. Lets face it, the celebrity queen of Rescue, famous for her vegetarian regime of not eating ‘ anything with a face.’ Meanwhile, her own son blew his face off with a shotgun. And her own self narrative belies nothing in her maternal instincts that would have avoided that fact.
