When we talk about the morality of animals feeling pain, I always wonder what animals are, beyond just their bodies. What is the thing inside them that actually feels what their body feels. I don’t have an answer, but at least I am asking the question. If animals were simply bodies, then nothing that they feel is actuall felt. Like a movie on a screen with nobody in the theater, nobody sees the movie. If animals are some kind of soul like we are, that have a body and experience what happens to that body, then there is much more moral reason to mitigate any pain we might cause them.
