Of the many crimes that have been committed by governments against their citizens in their global war on cash (also here), perhaps this is the most bizarre. Here is the story
It all started one Saturday morning when Jarl Syvertsen, a 59-year-old disabled Norwegian man, purchased a PC, TVs, and washing machines for 80,000 kroner (roughly US$13,000) which he paid in cash. The store immediately alerted the police about the large cash payment. On Sunday a male and a female police officer appeared on Mr Syvertsens doorstep. Upon seeing them, Mr. Syvertsen at first feared that something may have happened to his mother, who is 86 years old and resides in a nursing home. But the police were there with a warrant to search his home, charging that the cash he had spent was money that came from a criminal offense. In fact, the money was actually part of an approximately one-million dollar advance on an inheritance he had received. Mr. Syvertsen attempted several times to explain to the officers where the money had come from and to show them a letter confirming that fact, but they would have none of it and proceeded to invade his home and his privacy. Eventually the police realized their error and left his home.

I’m surprised that something like this hasn’t happened here yet.
But the police won’t enforce these kinds of laws, right?
I’m afraid I’m not following you.
Police won’t enforce what kinds of laws?
Hehehe... you’re being silly, aren’t you.
It happens in America all the time. The only difference is, that if it had happened in the US, the cops would be 20 jackbooted, nomex-clad strumtruppen, they would have smashed down his door, and shot his dog.
1. Never let the police into your house without a warrant.
2. The police must have been very concerned about the credit card points this guy missed out on.
Most of the time someone will say the police won’t enforce tyrannical laws.
Here in Colorado, as Governor Hickenlooper signed into law the two unconstituional gun control laws that 58 of the 63 elected sheriffs are suing the state over, he promsed that the new laws wouldn't be enforced.
Try transporting 10k or more of your own cash via commercial air in the US and see what happens.
Well, any cash transaction over 10K has to be reported to the IRS.
It seems the great sacrifices made to save Europe from fascism 70 years ago have been for naught.
And people wonder why I oppose the WOD.
That’s what happens in Third World countries that don’t have a Bill of Rights.
” Eventually the police realized their error and left his home.”
It wasn’t an error. It was deliberate. Until the cops who pull this crap start catching bullets nothing will change. See Solzenhitzen.
Is his dog okay? [snort]
Statists are relentless.
3. Evidently, there isn’t much for the police to do in Norway.
Must have happened in a country like Norway. The “suspect” didn’t lose several teeth being slammed to the floor and his dog hasn’t been shot.
... Well, it’s better paying than arresting people who don’t have money!
Interesting because here in NYS with the new SAFE law in effect, the local county sheriff’s are speaking out against it and stating that they won’t be enforcing it either.
But this is Upstate NY, not NYC. There are some pretty desolate parts of the state even outside the Adirondack park, and even in my own town there are more guns than people.
