Anyone ever watch new reality show called "Amish Mafia" on Discovery?

I stopped watching network tv many years ago. Once in a while, I see Fox News at my friends place, or I will watch online for a particular episode that everyone is talking about that day. Yesterday I stumbled across comments on a new show called The Amish Mafia. I said "What?" The mafia is the last thing I think of when the first word is Amish.

I have a lot of respect for that culture, doing their best to co-exist in this modern materialistic culture. That's not to say everybody Amish is wonderful, but I admire their focus on family and work ethic. It suppose one should expect some aspects of the American culture to seep into the Amish, our glorification of aggression and righteous violence, so perhaps its only natural that the Amish want to present themselves in a new way, albeit based on fantasy. Every other culture has done it, let them have their fun too.

Reality shows are a joke. They are all scripted ahead of time and most of the story arcs are invented.

Did you know that the Amish were into rap music too? Check it out.

It’s fake as can be, just like all the other “reality” programs. In a dirty, underhanded way the creator is genius. Amish can’t watch tv, therefore they won’t know about the show. If they are told, and according to the Amish crew putting an addition on our house they are aware of the show, their beliefs prevent them from filing law suits. The creator gets to slander and libel them all he/she wants without worry.

We have Amish and Mennonites in our area. I have attended their auctions and been to their stores.

I also watch every program about them. While The Amish Mafia is probably the least true and the most fake, others are not. They are not the spiritual Godly people everyone (the English) thinks they are. “Amish Out Of Order” was probably the most accurate and REAL. It exposed the truth about the Amish culture and most of it isn’t pretty.

Essentially they are a CULT. While there are many different sects with different rules, they are mostly oppressive, exploitive, and even barbaric.

They are not the quaint mild mannered people you think they are. We are all outsiders to them. They have nothing but disdain for us. We are inferior to them. Sinful pagans to be avoided. Now some of them like our money and will be nice to us to get it, but don’t be fooled the women and children are nothing more than property, slaves if you will. They are cute with their little hats, bonnets, and outfits, but it is a life that if you were dropped into, you would escape at your first opportunity.

While at a poker game back when this show first started the question came up; are there Amish hookers? After much debate my friends and I came up with these indicators;
1.Appearance-Bonnet tied seductively and pulled back to expose the entire forehead. Charcoal-colored dress instead of black.
2. Speech-”Art thou just arrived in our village, sailor?” “Wouldst thou like to party?”
3.Beguiling personality-Think Amy Farah Fowler from Big Bang Theory with fishnet stockings hidden under her dress.
4.Payment-Ears of corn.
5.Her pimp-Riding a buggy with gangster whitewalls and a tie-dyed horse.

No way about, I gotta get some new friends...

P.S. What goes “Clop,clop,clop,clop, BANG! Clop.clop,clop,clop, BANG!”?
An Amish drive-by shooting.

From a recent episode:

Jebediah: "They want to have a meeting with me, right? Let's set the meeting. It will be me, Yoder, and Hostetler. We'll get our informers to find out where the meeting will be held. We insist that it be in a public place.....a barn, a produce stand, someplace where I'll feel safe. They're gonna search me when they pick me up, so I can't have a weapon on me. But if Stoltzfus can figure a way to have a gun planted there for me.....then I'll kill them both."

Back in the Eighties I worked for a Mennonite and he confided a lot of what I’ll call their “philosophy”. Mennonites and Amish are not always who they appear to be.

To get to work I had to drive about 15 miles through Amish and Mennonite country . One morning I asked my Boss why the buggies wouldn’t get over when I over took them, especially when there was another vehicle coming the other way. He just looked at me and said,” If you think you’re better than everyone else, would you get over ?”

The same Boss had a son who went to the Caribbean every winter to be missionary. I once asked why go there , the Catholic church does a lot in the Caribbean. The answer was quick and furious. That’s why we have to be there!’

I was laughing about this show with a young Amish couple I met in my doctor’s office waiting room. His take was that it would pass and there are worse things they could have made up...

I have a friend who knows Eli, who tells me Eli is not Amish.

The show is a total fake, but Amish and Mennonites do have a “holier than thou” attitude at times, especially the Mennonites and some of their sects.

And that would be different from many of the other Christian sects how?

I am not bashing “Christianity”, why are you? I’m just pointing out that there are hypocrites and “holier than thou” types and this is not just limited to some among the Amish and Mennonites sects.

FWIW, I live and work in Lancaster Co. PA and I’ve not run into the Amish and Mennonites that you describe. They try to live “separate” from the worldly world for the most part but they are not from my experiences with them, what you describe.

Stoltzfus is a very common surname. From a prolific family line, or it may be an adopted name, to more easily conform.

I watch Amish Mafia :)
I also sometimes enjoy Mob Wives.

It entertains me and makes me smile.

Of course I also love the Walking Dead...
But that's for my darker side :)

Interesting.
Jumping to a conclusion based on an illusion.
Christianity today has a tenuous connection to Jesus Christ of nearly 2,000 years ago.
I live in Lancaster County, PA. I grew up here. I regularly work with both Amish and Mennonite. Just as ALL Christian groups have their dirtbags, so do the Amish and Mennonites.
The “show” is pure, unadulterated BS. Not even the clothing is “authentic”.
The garbage television spews has to be taken with a ton of salt.

True story from back in the late ‘60’s. My older brother was driving home from Philadelphia to where we lived outside of Harrisburg and being that it was such a beautiful spring day, he took a bunch of back roads. His car broke down on one of those rural roads, breaking down in an area with nothing but Amish farms all around.

This was long before the days of cell phones and there was little traffic and those few cars that did pass him, none stopped. Before long an Amish man and his son who had been working their fields came over to see if they could help, my brother thinking - “what are these guys going to do?” The old man looked under the hood of my brother’s car and quickly ascertained that he had a broken hose (the Amish may not own or drive cars themselves but they are very mechanical).

The Amish man told my brother that he had probably a hose that would fit back at his workshop so my brother climbed in the back of their horse drawn wagon. Sure enough the farmer’s workshop was full of all sorts of things, hoses, belts, engine parts. Turns out he made repairs on farm tractors (for the local non-Amish farmers) as well as having a blacksmith shop. The farmer had a very, very old rotary telephone in the workshop that worked and told my brother that perhaps he might like to call home in case his parents were worried. The man’s wife came out and brought my brother some “coldish” tea and some cookies.

The man found a similar hose, gathered some tools and he, his son and my brother got back in the wagon to my brother’s car where the Amish farmer made quick work of the repair, of course telling my brother he should take it to a “real” mechanic as soon as he could but that it should be good enough to get him home.

When my brother offered to give the Amish man some money for the hose and for his time and trouble, he Amish man refused. He said something in German that my brother supposed was from the Bible. He and his son shook my brother’s hand and wished him a safe trip home.

If anyone wants to know who the Amish are, you aren’t going to find it these fake and trashy so called “reality” shows (and I know they are fake, the TV producers of Breaking Amish and Amish Mafia ran ads in the local newspapers around here for “actors” and “extras”).

If you want to know a little about the Amish, read up on the Nickel Mines School shooting and how the Amish not only forgave the murderer of those sweet little girls, but reached out to his family and embraced them.

Discovery has become the new Tru-TV or History Channel where literally every show can just be declared fiction from the get-go.

This TV is just bus from some Christ hater with his nose in a pile of blow scribbling away in Topanga canyon
