The real crime here is that some nitwit somewhere (or maybe many) actually believe a leather bag would sell for $38K.
I suppose if I were to point out that the bag that the sales clerk pointed out is ugly, but then so is the handbag Oprah wanted to buy, I’d probably get in trouble. So I won’t.
I was so puzzled by them suddenly leaving that I kept thinking about the exchange. After about 10 minutes I realized I had seen her on the Mike Douglas talk show promoting her husband’s anti-sugar book. He was in the entourage.

Oprah lies - whodathunkit? I guess she was miffed about not being fawned over and then had a stupid moment where she thought that if they didn’t know her in this overseas shop, she could propagate the lie and stay incognegrito...
I’m glad to see that she didn’t bow down in abject submission and grovel 25 apologies and promise to rip her heart out. She defended herself.
If this had been an American shopkeeper, the weight of White Guilt would have borne down on her and she would be on the floor begging forgiveness.

I wanted to comment on this issue the other day. Any business that sells $30,000 + handbags has security cameras in many locations. I want to see video, or this episode didn’t happen. I feel okra lied just like 0 bummer lies every time he opens his pie (or other) hole.
When she climbed up on that cardboard Greek amphitheater in Colorado and cried her fake eyelashes off she was cooked, finished, done.
Right after that Michelle tossed her out of the White House. So, she had a bad day that’s turned into 8 years.
Oprah was miffed that she was not recognized as being a VIP and having the staff kowtow to her. The race card is always played as a convenient excuse.
You know, I'm open-minded enough to still have a few liberal friends, and to retain some respect and affection for Oprah from her earlier days, pre-Obama. But I have to say, her down home accent in the movie trailer is worse than Obama's and Hillary's when they are visiting a black church.
I also resent the premise of the movie, which is that Bobby Kennedy is the guy responsible for improving the lot of black people, having learned to admire his black butler. It was Dwight D. Eisenhower who turned things around for blacks.
Eisenhower, the Republican president before the Kennedy administration, had learned to respect the black soldiers who served with him in WW2, so much so that he (1) integrated the military, (2) proposed the first Civil Rights bill since reconstruction, and (3) enforced school integration at the point of a National Guard rifle -- all of which was BITTERLY, BITTERLY OPPOSED BY DEMOCRATS.
Ever since this story came out I was doubtful this ever happened. Oprah is going down in flames. She has been sidelined to some cable network and has lost 90% of her audience. She is so disconnected that she sthinks starting a race war will put her back on top. This was nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt to make herself relevant. She is washed up and will never come back. Wouldn’t be surprised that she is going bankrupt. This is a last ditch attempt like when JC Penny went gay in a delusional effort to boost sales. They shortly went bankrupt. Oprah is doing the same thing here except that she is a race pimp.

Ah, but there’s an element of truth behind any stereotype or else it would not be recognizable.
Exactly. There is a pattern you know. Jim Carrey did his public rant last month and dozens of actors before them. They all do it, the only way to be relevent.
What does Oprah claim was said?
Did the saleslady say the handbag made her butt look bigger?

If this was her exact choice of words, it is unfortunate. However, along with the headline "Oprah's a Liar" obviously inserted by DailyMail to be inflammatory, I would doubt that statement, because the clerk was Italian, and the shop owner and the clerk herself said her English isn't very good. So I doubt she said "cannibalize" (Italian: cannibalizzare); but if she did, it's a colloquialism for "eat me alive" or "make mincemeat of me" or a dozen other expressions more polite than "make a big f***in' deal out of it."
You underestimate her actual accomplishments. She left network television voluntarily after doing a daily show for - what - 25 or 30 years that was hugely successful, highly influential and very, very lucrative. She became among the wealthiest persons in the country and enjoyed top ratings until the last year or two of her daily show, after she made the bad mistake of showing her political ignorance by believing Obama would continue to support the capitalist system that had made her so successful.
During her network days, she also gained from spinning off shows for her protegés, Dr. Phil and Dr. Oz. She probably still owns part of those very profitable shows.
She was not forced or "sidelined" to cable -- it was an idea she wanted to try out, so she bought the Discovery Health channel and changed it to OWN. It does seem to be a struggling channel, because she is older now and it hasn't come as easily as her former career, and also because she alienated and continues to alienate her white audience. But she remains an incredibly wealthy person, with widespread business interests here and abroad, and little short of an outright confiscation is likely to change that in her remaining lifetime. Since she is a Democrat, she has a great deal of insulation from that happening.
They’re probably used to selling that type of bag to people with more money than sense, namely people spending Arab oil money.
But Oprah has a movie coming out and needs some sympathetic support for her Oscar campaign.
I know whom I am inclined to believe.
I really think Oprah felt she wasn’t getting the attention she deserved. So she used that tiny little incident - in which the woman didn’t immediately get a handbag down off the shelf - to spin a good yarn about how awful racism is. The truth of that incident doesn’t matter, she can use it for an object lesson and draw some attention to the “issue” of white-on-black racism.
And the company already “apologized”, and it’s owned by a friend of hers or something

20 years ago I filed an EEOC complaint with the Feds when a Black woman was promoted over me after I had been given the position. I’m White. The EEOC officer was Black. The White witness to the event told me privately she lied to prevent any fall-out. Case dismissed.
EEOC guy told me I was out of line to even file and that it was a union matter. I have never belonged to a union. Black woman was union VIP.
P.S. Black woman and I are still friends.
