Growing up in a city ,the the poster is likely to have seen a large number of the undesirable types ,so even if the percentage were the same as rural areas(which I doubt),he would still be justified in caution.

Lot’s of us grow up in cities, it doesn’t make us bitter cynics.

Surely FR is not made up of “rural” people, with city people a rarity.

Good for the guys and for the store management—getting some positive publicity and reaching out with the thanks.

But how sad it is that this is now news and in some way apparently exceptional.

In all fairness, this should be described as several young *black* men who are honest. While the media sidesteps that they were black, by their honesty they should get some local recognition and appreciation. They are role models.

And this really matters, here’s why.

Some years ago, a businessman opened up a bagel and doughnut delivery service for other businesses, with the idea that it would work on the honor system. While this worked fine for most of his customers, a couple businesses had a problem with people taking bagels or doughnuts and not paying for them.

So, with the cooperation of those businesses personnel departments, he put up hidden cameras to find out who was being dishonest. Several people were identified that way.

But then, the head of personnel for one business noted to him that each of the people who swiped bagels or doughnuts was already under suspicion for much more serious thefts and other offenses.

After firing them, the amount of theft and other crime at those businesses dropped to almost nothing.

This gave the bagel and doughnut dealer an idea, to shop his bagels and doughnuts to companies with the intent to spot *dishonest* employees, possibly saving these companies thousands or tens of thousands of dollars in losses from other thefts. What’s a few bagels and doughnuts worth?

In effect, he discovered that if people would steal little things, they were likely to steal big things. And this is why these young black men being honest is very important.

It is why they are role models.

Because it means that more than likely, if given positions of trust and authority, they will not abuse those either.

As such, they are *very* employable, even more so than their peers of *any* color. Once identified, they move to the head of the list for the kind of employees companies desperately want to have: honest ones.

And what better local recognition and appreciation than high quality job offers?

Having lived in both, I think many city people don’t realize what cynics they are (though not necessarily bitter or inaccurately).

Or, if it makes you feel better, rural folks are naive rubes—because they are used to the extreme decency of those around them.

Interesting story.

Unfortunately, of course, many high-paying jobs (outside of government) require more than honesty.

What a weird post, I challenged the idea that growing up in the city makes one a cynic, and you create some phony thing about rural people being “naive rubes” and trying to create a lie for me that I don’t believe, and didn’t imply that I did?

Whats up with you?

It might sound surprising, but job requirements are very deceptive at times.

It’s good to compare honesty with college graduate proficiency in the three R’s, as far as their ability to be employed after graduation. Many businesses get so many under-qualified but credentialed applicants that they both have to test them, and provide additional schooling before they can give them an entry level job.

But the problem with this is that there is no real training or testing for honesty before employment. Students might have fine credentials, a difficult to verify resume that looks great on the surface, and yet be totally dishonest. And firing a dishonest employee can take months, and maybe result in a lawsuit.

Many businesses prefer to hire only those applicants recommended and vouched for by their own employees. Their most important question to their employee: Is he honest?

If the answer is an enthusiastic yes, then they will hire him, figuring they will have to train him anyway. Credentials don’t really matter unless they are legally required to do a job.

Am I misreading your post 26? As I read it several times, I now think that perhaps I misinterpreted it, it is kind of confusing.

Good character. Or they thought it was a sting, or they thought the burglar just left, forgot to lock up, and they didn’t want to explain if some cop wandered in, or...they figured the cameras were rolling.
I’m city born and bred so I never assume good character.

LOL, it hardly figures that being called cynical would upset you so.

Skills and knowledge do matter for a lot of jobs; I’m not sure the nature of your business experience.

You can teach an honest lady to type easier than make a secretary out of a thief or whore. Likewise you could get someone going from the ground up on the machines they’ll be working with sooner than someone who’s going to skim, cut corners, put in backdoors, or other shenanigans.

Hey, I’m all for honesty.

It’s just that I’m in the IT world and we’re in an information economy, so I’m used to smarts and skills also being needed.

BTW—I think the whole country would be better off hiring more for talent (and character) first—and then giving a little more specific training where needed.
