Life DID begin on Mars - then we all travelled to Earth on a meteorite

It might not just be men who are from Mars, claims a new study which suggests that all life on Earth actually began on the red planet.

An element believed to be crucial to the origin of life would only have been available on the surface of Mars, it is claimed.

Geochemist Professor Steven Benner argues that the 'seeds' of life probably arrived on Earth in meteorites blasted off Mars by impacts or volcanic eruptions.

Professor Steven Benner will tell geochemists gathering today at the annual Goldschmidt conference that an oxidised mineral form of the element molybdenum, which may have been crucial to the origin of life, could only have been available on the surface of Mars and not on Earth As evidence he points to the oxidised mineral form of the element molybdenum, thought to be a catalyst that helped organic molecules develop into the first living structures.

Professor Benner will present his findings to geochemists gathering today at the annual Goldschmidt conference.

‘In addition recent studies show that these conditions, suitable for the origin of life, may still exist on Mars,’ said Professor Benner, of the Westheimer Institute for Science and Technology in Gainesville, Florida.

‘It’s only when molybdenum becomes highly oxidised that it is able to influence how early life formed.

‘This form of molybdenum couldn’t have been available on Earth at the time life first began, because three billion years ago the surface of the Earth had very little oxygen, but Mars did.

‘It’s yet another piece of evidence which makes it more likely life came to Earth on a Martian meteorite, rather than starting on this planet.’

Son, I've seen the future. The future is molybdenum!

think, might, probably, may, possibly, perhaps...

I think the scientist might have been guessing. In fact he probably was, and may possibly want to consider another line of work. Perhaps “science” isn’t his strong suit.

Problem here is that "organic molecules" supposedly existed before living structures ... but isn't the word "organic" associated only with living structures?

Right.
Because he forgot the part about the singed eyebrows.

No, “organic” is any carbon based structure.

It is claimed by many scientists that life arose in our ocean, because the chemical reactions to assemble a self replicating molecule was a really, really, really, lucky accident, and it helps the odds if all the chemicals are being mixed in a large ocean, creating trillions of chemical reactions and using the energy of the sun and wind. Yet even then, the odds are really really not so good, and there are enough difficulties that some scientists have resorted to Panspermia, the theory that life originated elsewhere, and was sent here.

But by claiming that life originated on Mars, they aren't really making things more believable. Mars probably had liquid water, but not as much as Earth, and so the number of random chemical reactions goes down considerably, and making spontaneous life from non life even harder. Plus, the sun is nearly twice as far away, giving Mars only a fraction of the energy it gives to Earth. Again, this limits the energy in the Martian system and limits the number of chemical reactions that could have been randomly done. So even if there is molybdenum there, I doubt it would overcome the extra hurdles imposed by the Martian environment.

Yes, they have been watching too much “Ancient Aliens” on the History Channel, where every sentence begins with “could it be that ....?”.

Even if so... So what?

Whether life began on mars and moved here, or life began here... It doesn’t explain why life began.

Because it could.

“organic” is any carbon based structure.

Check your dictionary. Compounds like carbon dioxide are called "inorganic."

The human hand is one of the most marvelous things on earth. Joints for flexibility. Bones for rigidity. Tendons connecting to muscle tissue which are connected to the central nervous system which respond to mere thoughts viathe human mind.

Engineers, surgeons, chemists, etc, have worked for hundreds of years to reproduce the human hand and the best they can come up with is a very unimpressive (when compared to the original) facsimile.

And the atheist insists this happened by mere chance, not to mention the rest of the human body.
