The 8 Cheapest States for Retirees
Wall St Cheat Sheet ^ | September 26, 2013 | Kurtis Droge

With baby boomers getting ready to pack it in and head toward retirement, many people are wondering where they are going to want to spend their golden years. This is not only applicable to statisticians or government record keepers, but also to business owners, health care companies, nurses, and doctors.

While some are sure to head for the warmth of Southern weather, the coziness of the countryside, or the long sought-after home of their youth, many will be looking to their bank accounts rather than their hearts to determine a final place of residence. For those monetarily conscious retirees, here is a list of the eight best states to retire to, by the numbers, according to analysis from Kiplinger.

The beaches in Delaware suck.........they are full of northeast liberals who have brought their northeast mentalities with them.

Good part of why I don’t live there anymore.

Alaska being #1 is a CROCK!!!! Housing is expensive, food is expensive, gas is expensive, getting away is expensive...

I've been to plenty of states over the years and I can tell you that the gap has narrowed considerably. Most of my food comes from the Elmendorf commissary, but even so, outside food prices are not much different than the local grocery store. Housing is very affordable in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, as are utilities. Gas isn't that bad and I can fly Space A for free. The sales tax in Wasilla is 2 percent, capped at $10 and outside of Wasilla, and in Anchorage, there is no sales tax. When we are fully retired, we will easily be able to afford trips outside during the winter.

Besides the cost of living, there are other benefits to living in Alaska. We are a very free state when it comes to personal liberties. If you want to carry concealed, no permit is required though one is available for reciprocity purposes. We have castle doctrine and stand your ground. I can ride my Harley without a helmet. There are no vehicle inspections and the police pretty much leave you alone if you are not a criminal. There are no red light cameras and no photo radar. I don't need a permit to do anything to my house. In fact, I don't even need a permit to build a house. I can have paper or plastic when I go to the store. No deposits on cans or bottles. I mean, the list goes on and on.

I think I know why Alaska is on the list. Friends who lived there told me that there is nothing to do during those long winters that doesn’t involve booze or sex.

Were they bar flies? There is lots to do in the winter. You park the Harley and fie up the Arctic Cat. You take the wheels or floats off your plane and put on the skies. You can still go hiking, you just wear extra clothing. Fishing turns into ice fishing. Anyone who says they are bored in the winter is probably just as bored in the summer because they probably just sit around and do nothing.

Alaska has beaches...ish

Not only that, but you can see Russia from some of them.

However, bear in mind in your retirement planning that Gambell, AK, where the above was taken, has a local sales tax of 3%.

And that’s 1% higher than Wasilla, from which you definitely cannot see Russia, all rumors to the contrary!

“Gambell, AK, where the above was taken”

Tina “I CAN SEE RUSSIA FROM MY HOUSE!” Fey should be taken there, and ridiculed.

We have ONE corrupt federal gov’t which will make everyone miserable. There will be no place to hide outside of rebellion.
