Rick Santorum’s movie ‘The Christmas Candle’ flops

Now that it’s been out for two weeks, it’s about time to acknowledge “The Christmas Candle” for what it is — a massive flop.

Distributed by EchoLight, Rick Santorum’s family-friendly film distribution firm, “The Christmas Candle,” an old-fashioned holiday tale about a fictional English town in the late 19th century, has grossed less than $2 million since its release, bringing in a pathetic $2,500 per screen.

Unsurprisingly, the film’s reviews are no better than its finances. Joe Neumaeir of the New York Daily News wrote that the film is “as if a little plastic holiday village came to life. Except that might be interesting.” Peter Sobczynski of rogerebert.com also panned the movie, writing, “The end result is the kind of vaguely distasteful Yuletide concoction that viewers normally find playing on cable channels that they don’t even realize that they have.”

Well....this is the first I’ve even heard of it, so I can’t say I’m surprised it isn’t doing well.

Uuuuum, “The Christmas Candle” was NOT created by RS. It was created by Max Lucado.

Santorum’s post-primary career saw him become CEO of EchoLight Studios in June, and the first title to reach the box office during his tenure is an inspirational Christmas story, based on a book by Max Lucado, a Texas minister. The film is about a young minister in 1890s London who is questioning his faith and doesn’t agree with his congregation’s belief in a candle that produces miracles.

It’s not unusual for initial releases from a new company to flop theatrically. This should see profits from DVD sales through Christian outlets.

i’m sure salon would give two thumbs up to a Christmas movie that:

1. is not produced by someone who celebrates Christmas
2. has very little about Christmas in it
3. the stories main characters have “non traditional” lives
4. it ends with a lesson about how people who don’t celebrate christmas turn out to be the hero’s of the movie.

A CHRISTMAS CANDLE TRAILER

Looks like something I would like to see. Something that is good a clean for a change.

FWIW “A Christmas Story” was a flop when originally released in theaters.

First I’ve heard of it. But the last thing in the world I would do is take the word of someone at Rogerebert.com or Salon about an inspirational Christian film.

It may be good, it may be bad, but these guys certainly will kill it if they possibly can.

The article just says Santorum’s film distribution company is distributing it.

My wife and I saw it a week and a half ago. We both REALLY liked it, but we’re bitter inland clingers, not of the anointed coasts.

If the reviewers DON'T like the movie, then I usually do.
I found that the Hollyweird reviewers and I have little in common when it comes to movies. They always like the dull, depressing, dreary stories, especially about the holocaust and the gulags.
Needless to say I love the shoot-em-up Eastwood, westerns, adventures, Robert Ludlum, BOURNE stuff. Oh well.
