My black conservative neighbor just got back from a family reunion. He couldn't believe some of his relative still support Obamacare.
"Haven't you heard of Tuskegee?" he kept asking them.
As most FREEPERS know the US government experimented with blacks in Tuskegee to see the effects of untreated syphilis at a time when a cure existed.
I thought this argument was a good one. worthy of FREEPER consideration.
Governments who control your healthcare can do whatever they please to you.
The circumstances you were told about the Tuskegee experiment are at odds with what I have seen in the literature. My understanding is that the patients all had tertiary stage syphilis for which there was no cure, and all gave informed consent to the treatment. That is, they knew some would receive a placebo as part of the test protocol. I have no way of verifying what version of the story is right, but thought you might like to know there is a different version of the story out there.
now if the black population ever really thought about what is going on........to me, It couldn't be more clear....
When the experiment began, there was really no treatment. Partway through the experiment, penicillin was discovered. Treatment with penicillin would have cured the men, but it was withheld and the experiment was continued for 25 additional years, with no treatment.
Not ethical. At all.
I suppose that means they have been able to pretty much do whatever they wanted to us for decades.
I feel for your friend. I walk in the same shoes.
Last time I visited the liberal family out in California, I had a rotten time. The place and the people were so creepy, I felt like I was in some sort of weird dream I couldn't wake up from.
When the wheels finally went up on my flight back to Texas, I experienced a huge rush of relief.
From the Wikipedia link:
“They were never told they had syphilis, nor were they ever treated for it.”
I realize that Wikipedia is not exactly chiseled by God on the tablets Moses brought down from Sinai.
But the fact is that the black libs you’d might profitably use this line of reasoning with have been told the commonly known story at Wikipedia.
I doubt if you’d hear the argument: “The US government didn’t treat us blacks that badly in those experiments, so I trust the goverment”.
Sounds like it’s time to write ‘em off and never go back. Be sure to let them know exactly why.
you take what the King offers, you have to do the kings Bidding.
if you walk into a GovMed Office and they say they want to test a new drug, you may have to do it.
There is still dispute as to if and why penicillin treatment was withheld. Some doctors, admittedly with an interest in the case, said it was thought to be too late to have effect. As I said, I have no way of telling who is right or wrong in this, but many of the politicians who have jumped on the story (Clinton, Kennedy)are known liars who would never miss a chance to exploit a tragedy.
