Queens man breaks leg in Harlem attack, claims to be victim of the 'knockout game'

A Queens man broke his leg Thursday in a horrific, unprovoked daytime attack similar to a “knockout game” strike, the Daily News has learned.

Clifford Wong, 52, was leaving his job at a New York Lottery office in Harlem and was nearing his car on W. 126th St. near Lenox Ave. at about 2:30 p.m. when he saw a group of black teens watching him.

“Something didn’t feel right so I crossed the street,” he said. “I took a few steps and in an instant one guy was in front of me.”

“Where do you think you’re going?” the suspect — believed to be about 15 — asked before he and several of his pals started lobbing haymakers at him.

“Basically they were trying to aim at my face,” said Wong in an interview at Harlem Hospital Saturday. “I had my hands up, but they hit my nose.”

The goons pummeled Wong until he fell to the ground and then ran off.

Paramedics rushed Wong to Harlem Hospital with cuts, scrapes and multiple leg fractures he sustained in the fall.

“I was on the ground when the ambulance came,” Wong recalled. “They tried to get me off the ground and that’s when I realized there were some big problems with my knee.”(continued)

...when he saw a group of black teens watching him.

(So he put his hand on the handle of his sheath knife.)

“Something didn’t feel right so I crossed the street,” he said. “I took a few steps and in an instant one guy was in front of me.”

“Where do you think you’re going?” the suspect — believed to be about 15 — asked...

(”I’m taking my knife to be sharpened”, he said, as he pulled it and pointed it at the yoot.)

“Have a nice day, sir”, said the yoot, as he ran back to his group.

“Have a nice day, sir”, said the yoot, as he ran back to his group.

In reality, he would have retreated while shouting "Eff you, mothereffer", while dialing 911 to inform the police that a knife-wielding ch!nk tried to mug him. And the guy would have spent tens of thousands of dollars defending himself in court, since in NYC, carrying a knife with more than a 2-inch blade is illegal. An NYC acquaintance (who's now deceased from the usual old age maladies) once pulled a gun on a knife-wielding mugger, who reported him to the cops. Net result was he spent the night in jail and incurred tens of thousands in legal expenses staying out of prison.

Well it was his fault. He should just let them have their fun and moved on.

From the article:

He said he was at a loss to figure out how he could have protected himself from something so random.

“I wish I had the answer,” he said.

“Maybe Police Commissioner Kelly will have the answer for me. We all want to be safe.”

He actually wonders how he could have protected himself. Need I make a suggestion...or is something so far removed from his experience?

The way in which the article was written, one can almost detect some reluctance on the part of the author.. I’m wondering if they were given the assignment and purposely made it ambiguous.. jus sayin..

I couldn’t write that the way the person did. I couldn’t be the editor and let it go through. It would be hard for me to see that being done unintentionally for whatever reason. These people know the meaning of words. They are crafty. I don’t think think they do this sort of thing by accident.

126th and Lenox......It is safer in Afghanistan. And the new New York mayor has said the police may no longer do aggressive, sensible, proactive police work. More to come....

Shouldn’t this read “His leg was broken” and NOT “he broke his leg?”

Those two statements, taken by themselves, are interchangeable. If you want to say that his leg was broken as the result of an unprovoked assault on him, you should be more specific and add more to the sentence or headline so that the reader knows exactly what you mean.

How much would multiple leg fractures, etc. cost him in the hospital?

That’s the thing about gun tyranny places. Since citizens aren’t supposed to be armed, criminals can run roughshod.

Would $10k be worth not getting killed by such thugs?

If it’s a simple fracture, and didn’t require operating room time/staff & overnite, probably $1-2k.

If there’s an operation or new knee and extended stay, many thousands.

I’m a not very-savvy Aussie, the way I read that headline is, some fella fell down and broke his leg and tried to blame some youts for knocking him down.
That headline would work a treat if the victim was found guilty of attempting insurance fraud.
