'Duck Dynasty' backlash spotlights an uneasy reality in TV industry

But the particular problem for the TV industry is that it's trying to profit off the same cultural tensions it's exploiting. That inevitably leads to problems such as the current one engulfing "Duck Dynasty."

The reality programming trend in recent years has made stars out of everyone from bakers to pawnbrokers to catfish-wranglers. That these "authentic" people have opinions and values that don't always jibe with those of the media elite in New York and Los Angeles isn't necessarily surprising.

...

But it means that the executives and PR handlers have had to get very good at backpedaling away from uncomfortable realities. That's most likely what is happening now on "Duck Dynasty."

"A&E has been very careful in editing and presenting this family, being careful not to show any potential controversial views," said Robert J. Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University. "But they can't control what they say outside of the show."

"Channels like A&E program 'regular' people mostly to make curiosities out of them," said Jeffrey McCall, a media studies professor at DePauw University. "The programmers want to manage every aspect of their 'reality' commodities, but that isn't really possible.

"If A&E wants the Robertsons to make money for the channel by being authentic, then at some point A&E has to accept that reality stars will be real human beings," McCall added. "If A&E didn't like the Robertsons as they are, then why did they give them a weekly platform?"

Oh, I thought the uneasy reality is that the executives are anus fans.

I like this article’s take on the elite handlers attitude:

That would explain the Kardashians.

Because we enjoy the show and like the family and watch it with our family.

(and we’re tired of the two faced, intolerant “tolerance” crowd always being in our faces).

WHY does ANYONE care about "Duck Dynasty"??

I didn't UNTIL A&E brought this thing into the headlines. NOW I'm interested. Interested enough to contact A&E and let them know my displeasure over suspending Phil. I watched a few minutes of the program a long time ago and just didn't "get it".

Well, because it is a great family show promoting Christian ideals (for the most part). It is funny and wholesome. WHY would ANYONE not care about the treatment of Phil Robertson? Phil was simply paraphrasing 1 Corinthians 6:9.

Two good reasons. My apologies.
Continue to enjoy.

I'm highly amused that these bubble-living, tv execs are stunned that people outside their bubble don't share the same degenerate views they harbor. Phil Robertson's views on homosexuality are probably the same as 70-75% of all adult males. Naturally, many male libs hide their true feelings about homosexuality for fear of being ostracized by their peers.

It has nothing to do with hating homosexuals or not tolerating their behavior. It's just a fact that, like Robertson said, the human anus was designed for one particular function not involving sexual organs.

My favorite shows, since I can't give you just one:

Tennis
Cooking shows (Rachael Ray and the Barefoot Blimp)
O'Reilly
Sci fi
Law & Order, all of them
Court shows: Judge Alex, People's court, Judge Mathis, etc. All the judges are good.
Magnum
Dragnet

"WHY does ANYONE care about "Duck Dynasty"?? "

NY Daily News headlines it as SCHMUCK DYNASTY. Maybe that will attract viewers in NYC.

Because it is the only show on TV that you can watch with your children that doesn’t have gratuitous sex scenes, filthy language and liberal brainwashing agendas.

It is good wholesome fun. I can turn it on and not have to see gratuitous lesbian sex, toilet humor, or banal dialogue from over priced liberal mouthpieces.

The family is genuine and every episode they give thanks to God for their blessings.

A seemingly good and decent person is being unfairly targeted and abused by powerful elites. It upsets people.

I kinda sorta suspect that the female execs at A&E couldn’t face the prospect of the Christmas party season having to deal with all their Hollywood pals giving them grief over Phil, so they decided to discipline him a little bit...

...and then the fight started.

Now they have an even bigger problem, the potential loss of their most popular show.

This is what happens when someone makes an socio-emotional decision based on peer acceptance when they should have been making a business decision.
