Judging from the ship numbers, the lead vessel is the guided missile destroyer Arleigh Burke, lead ship in the Burke-class of destroyers, while the ship right alongside the carrier is the guided missile cruiser Leyte Gulf, a Ticonderoga-class cruiser.

The panels are what used to be a Radar dish, the new system is called Phased Array Radar. It is now computer swept instead of the Radar dish rotating it’s all done electronically sending signals to the different sections of the panel.

It is a classic.

If I remember correctly, the third and fourth ships in column are actually heavy cruisers, but for the life of me I can't find where I read that.

Thanks for the info, GATOR NAVY.

The task force was hit by a kamikaze attack shortly after the picture was taken. On January 5, Louisville was struck on the number two turret, but only suffered minor damage. The next afternoon, however, another kamikaze hit her on the bridge, mortally wounding Rear Admiral Thomas Chandler, the commanding officer of CRUDIV4 (Cruiser Division 4).

This is a still from film of the attack here. 43 dead, can't find a number for the wounded but it must have been large.
