Many college football fans are thrilled that Florida State overcame an 18-point deficit to defeat Auburn in the last ever BCS National Championship. Much of that elation has little to do with Florida State itself. Rather, fans are just excited to see the SEC lose a title game.
An SEC team had won the seven previous championship games, a streak that confirmed the conference’s status as ruler of the keep. Yet on Monday night, the much-hated SEC finally lost a title shot. It took eight years, but a knight clad in garnet-and-gold slayed the dragon.

It’s kind of sad the referees tainted the outcome by getting involved. FSU might have won anyway. Good job by FSU coming back, but I still think Auburn is better.
I remember back in the late 50s and early 60s, Florida would put up FSU for SEC membership every year. Then the SEC would vote not to accept them.
I bet if they had, FSU would still be an SEC member.

If Washington State hadn’t suffered a last-minute meltdown, the Pac-12 would have been 7-2 in its bowl games. Next year, the Pac-12 could have as many as six teams in the top 25: Oregon, Stanford, UCLA, Arizona State, USC, and Washington. And that doesn’t even include Oregon State and Arizona, both of which won bowl games.

I think he means the second-to-last touchdown by FSU on the short slant play in the end zone with the phantom pass interference penalty.
Beyond that, I saw a few ref calls against Auburn that were non-existent but do not remember them specifically. I would have to see the entire replay to augment my comment.

If they were better they would have won. And if that’s the case then I think Ohio State is better than Michigan State and Clemson.
Wasn't the second to last touchdown by FSU the 100 yard+ kick off return? Either way, that pass interference play in the end zone was hardly phantom. The Auburn guy was all over him the entire play.
FSU lost the first BCS game to a SEC team, Tennessee. The BCS died with FSU playing and beating a SEC team, Auburn. I saw the final top ten and South Carolina was rated fourth. WTH? South Carolina lost to a Tennessee team that didn’t even get to play in a bowl and still ranked fourth in the polls?
FSU won because they had the ball last. Statistically Auburn dominated the game. Mason alone shredded the FSU defense for almost 200 yards rushing.
The Big 10 refs let the Auburn defenders mug the FSU receivers most of the night… missed a facemask on Winston and the Auburn player spiked the ball after their past score (unsportmanlike?) then after missing a horse collar and face mask on the SAME PLAY, they finally decided the toss a flag on the last mugging in the end zone with seconds left. With the final fortuitous results… Go Noles!!!
There were at least two blatant facemasks on Auburn that the refs “missed” and at least one horse collar.
IIRC, FSU’s Winston was on the receiving end of both a Horsecollar and Facemask in one play on the final drive. No penalty. There was another missed horsecollar on a receiver running down the right sideline. The announcers commented on that one.
For the most part the refs seemed to be intent on “letting them play”. Auburn did get called on a blatant pass interference in the end zone. Than may be the penalty in question.
Barners just can’t help themselves. They will whine for all eternity over a missed call, even if it was the correct one, with no mention of the much more numerous ones that went their way. And that’s when they WIN the game. They are even worse when they lose.

An Auburn player made one huge mistake on FSU’s next to last play of the game and allowed them to score. However, FSU, as much as I hate to admit it, got themselves in a position to win. Auburn didn’t show up the second half and FSU did. They came back just like A&M came back against Duke.
I say the same thing about Auburn beating Alabama. It may have been a “fluke” return for a touchdown, but Auburn was in a place for that “fluke” to decide the game. Saban knew that if it went into O/T they were done with so he went for a long FG try just hoping Alabama would get lucky. The luck went the other way.
That’s absurd….first of all, the pass interference was on the last touchdown, not the second to the last, and it was clearly a blatant pass interference call….
You’re not even the poster who first mentioned this, but you’re both flat wrong.
I think your analysis is a tad flawed. There was no “mistake” per se on the next to the last play of the game…the FSU receivers are simply superior to the Auburn secondary, and it finally started to manifest….altho that secondary was outstanding most of the game. As for the kick return, the dude is the fastest player in all of college football….it was hardly a fluke….kick returns are not common on kick offs, but they are hardly flukes.
Returns of field goals, on the other hand…..
That last pass interference was classic pass interference….no way not to call that one. As for the horse collar miss on the long pass play…that was inexcusable….FSU had no such blown call in their favor all night.
The officiating was not a factor in the outcome.
Statistically, the game was only slightly in favor of Auburn. Factor in a 100 yard kick off return, and the stats favor FSU.
