Not sure if I read it in MacArthur’s biography or Eisenhower’s. Some kids were asphyxiated I think during the tear gassing too.

This was the “Bonus Army”.

WWI vets were given bonds for their serrvice - payable something like 25 years after the end of the war.

Unfortunarely, the Great Depression came along and the vets wanted the government to pay off early.

They gathered in camps along the Mall in DC - similar to “Hoovervilles” or “Occupy Wall Street.”

The government’s position was “a deal is a deal” and that it didn’t have the money at the time anyway.

Thus, the Army was ordered to clear the vets off of the Mall ...

The veterans had largely dispersed and were replaced by communists

Does that justify the use of military force against civilians?

It was taught in my history classes (1972) in college, not in high school though.

Since this administration is doing all it can to destroy the US economy and cause another great depression, it won’t only be veterans at the mall in DC, it will be the great racial/class war that the communists have been working for since Roosevelt.

William Robert: You are wrong in both your assessment of our military (and the oaths they take), as well as the response you advocate. I refuse to believe that my Brothers and Sisters (with a few exceptions) will violate their oaths and attack civilians simply for demonstrating. There are too many of us who believe in the oaths we took, and keep living by.

Does that justify the use of military force against civilians?

Every time there's a major race riot, we see the use of military force against civilians.

U.S. government property in D.C.

Not sure posse comitatus would apply.

Come now, you speak as though the government is some foreign alien. Who is the government and whose property are we talking about?
The lesson to take from this sorry display by the Peoples’ servants is that the servants attacked their master and they were able to do so because the military betrayed their oath and their true master and sided with the lawless. This is the fear we are facing today. If the military sides with the lawless, the People are screwed.

Any time large numbers of people riot, the military gets involved.

The Left will never forgive MacArthur for rolling up those communists.

Just like the Left will never forgive Richard Nixon for nailing Alger Hiss despite the fact that as president, Nixon enacted a boatload of the Left's agenda items.

Legal question that I’m not of the answer to. D.C. has different laws, or did then.

‘Bonus Army’ was covered in my 9th grade American history book.

“They were starving.”

No, they weren’t. I’m sure many had to skip meals and had little or no work, but they were not starving. The simple fact is that starving men would have no energy to march or travel hundreds of miles and protest for weeks on end. They would all have died. I don’t deny they were desperate, but they were not starving.

“Unintended Consequences” is an excellent book. Captivating and very informative at the same time.
