Study: Fatal Car Crashes by Marijuana Smokers up 300% over Last Decade

The study draws its conclusions from statistics on more than 23,500 drivers who died within one hour of a crash between 1999 and 2010. The toxicology tests were performed on victims from six states including: California, Hawaii, Illinois, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and West Virginia. While alcohol related traffic fatalities remained steady at 40% throughout the decade, drug related deaths soared from 16% in 1999 to a whopping 28% in 2010.

Significantly, the study cites marijuana use as the leading culprit for the swelling number of drug related traffic deaths, contributing to 12 percent of 2010 crashes. This represents a 300% increase compared with four percent in 1999. The study qualifies the pot statistics by emphasizing that because marijuana stays in the blood for up to one week, therefore, researchers said, "the prevalence of nonalcohol drugs reported in this study should be interpreted as an indicator of drug use, not necessarily a measurement of drug impairment."

5 mph? In the wrong lane? On an interstate? Yeah, probably.

Why don’t they just say they belong to the Kennedy clan? Obviously drugged driving is legal then.

Sadly the dope user, like a drunk driver, will take others with him or her.

The problem is that there isn’t a method to determine if a person is DUI with marijuana.

The studys conclusions have nothing to do with the title of the article. Also any test for pot will show for 30 days not the 7 stated in the article. Did Michael Mann write this??

"the prevalence of nonalcohol drugs reported in this study should be interpreted as an indicator of drug use, not necessarily a measurement of drug impairment."

So basically it shows that they detected more people who've smoked pot. Did the people change, or did the testing change (or maybe both)?

“... remained steady at 40% throughout the decade, drug related deaths soared from 16% in 1999 to a whopping 28%...”

Remained steady...soared...whopping. No bias there.

Or it shows pot smokers are just really bad drivers and/or have little concern for themselves or others.

There are so many loopholes in this story that I don’t know where to begin. First, in the not so distant past, full scale toxicology tests were not standard operating procedure for every motor vehicle accident that resulted in death. The tests were too expensive and too unreliable for routine use. Thus, we can’t tell from the reported statistic whether there has been am increase in stoned drivers or an increase in testing for stoned drivers. Second, the active ingredient in marijuana — THC — is fat soluble, which means it stays in the body for many, many weeks after the intoxicating effects have long worn off. To the best of my knowledge, there is no reliable test for determining the level of actual impairment from marijuana at a given moment.

Or that the ER nurses hate them, and they're getting really bad care. The possibilites are endless.....

Or the EMTs smell pot and don’t want to waste an IV bag on any of those people. Yup. Could go on and on.

If you are stopped at a red light, and either stoned or drunk, and you are rear ended and killed by a semi driven by a perfectly sober driver, you become a victim of pot or alcohol. They really mess the statistics up.

Did Michael Mann write this

This research has a lot in common with AGW research in that there is no grant money in a study showing that all is well. Cook your books to show an epedimic and your in the gravy.
