A picture has surfaced of a woman whose mummified remains were found in the garage of her Pontiac home, the body having lain there for around five years.
It is believed to be that of Pia Davida Farrenkopf, 49, the home's last occupant - though the police have yet to confirm this - and a black-and-white high school photograph of her has emerged....
The remains were discovered only last Wednesday when a bank contractor was sent to the home to investigate a hole in the roof after it went into foreclosure in March 2013.
Farrenkopf's payments for her mortgage, utilities and other bills, were automatically deducted from her bank account which at one time contained $54,000.
The money finally ran out, leading to the grim discovery of the woman's mummified body lying on the back seat of a Jeep Liberty registered to Farrenkopf inside the garage.
Undersheriff Mike McCabe told Detroit Free Press that investigators believe the woman has been dead since at least 2008. That’s the year the license plate on Farrenkopf's Jeep expired.
The body was clothed in a heavy jacket and jeans, leading investigators to believe that it was winter when she died.
The key was in the ignition, but it was switched to the off position.
Investigators are treating the death as a homicide at this time and say suicide by carbon monoxide seems unlikely. The body shows no signs of trauma, McCabe says.
Neighbor Darryl Tillery, 49, said the woman’s mail never piled up at the house and her lawn was kept neat.
'It was pretty manicured,' he told the Detroit Free Press. 'There was no indication there was a body in there, at all.'

Actually neighbors did notice. The police sent someone out who looked around (not very thoroughly, obviously) and said everything looked okay.

Further proof that in society's eyes, you are only worth the sum of your economic usefulness.

What would you have done?
Look around the outside of the home? Check.
Look in the windows? Check.
See no one and then what?
Break in when there is no indication of foul play—like a body in plain view or broken or trashed home.
Heck, they’re not supposed to break in if someone is home and denies entry or doesn’t answer the door at all and there is no indication of foul play that they can see.
and someone was picking up the mail and cutting the grass.
You would think someone from the bank would show up sooner. Sounds like the bank would have sold the place and the new owner would find the body if not for the contractor checking out the roof.
The bank noticed.
That’s why we should all die in massive debt.

This case is well past “48 Hours”. The cops are going to be way behind on this one.
The first person I would talk to is whoever had been cutting the grass for the last 5 years.
Who does that without remuneration for 5 years — I don’t care how good of a neighbor they are.
I bet she voted Democrat the last few elections
