Same thing happened to me when I visited Shinjuku Station.

It’s just one of those things that you have to get used to when visiting Japan, I guess.

Oh, I dunno.
I think it might be sort of cool to have a giant cat carry me wherever I wanted to go.

I was stationed there before it acquired statehood.

They outlawed Chewing gum in Singapore, trade agreements finally got them to relent on therapeutic gums like anti-smoking, but still no chewing or selling of regular gum.

It’s the law dude.

And it's been that way since, at least, the mid 80's when I was there.
We were warned to not even take a pack of gum with us. If we were caught with a pack of gum it could result in a caning.
