It's one of the most famous monster stories of all time. And now Godzilla has had a reboot - complete with incredible special effects and an amazing cast - for a new blockbuster due for release this summer. A new extended trailer for the movie, which stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, shows the back story of Bryan's nuclear physicist character Joe Brody, as well as the first proper look at the terrifying monster.

One of the problems with the original Godzilla was the terrible dubbing of English onto Japanese. Having the proper lip synch and just adding subtitles is usually a lot better.

They could cast it will California born Japanese actors and actresses. When Jackie Chan (who is Chinese and a GLOBAL movie star) made his post-1997 (Communist takeover of Hong Kong) transition to Hollywood, he was cast with a black or white sidekick (same with Jet Li).

Hollywood IS racist.

The original original Godzilla didn’t even have dubbing as I recall. The American version had narration from Raymond Burr as a journalist “translating” what some of the people were saying.

“My thirteen year old has been watching the Godzilla movie with Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno since he was a baby.”

At this point he is probably inured to many forms of psychological torture and interrogation techniques. I watched it once and tapped out, never to revisit the horror again.

> Based on the trailers coming this looks awesome.

I don’t want Godzilla to be awesome.
Godzilla is supposed to be the definition of “cheezy” and low budget. Without these attributes, it’s just another Hollywood CGI monster movie.

Fortunately, we can now see the original Toho release shown in Japanese theaters in 1954 on DVD here in the USA.

Interesting tidbit: the producer and director of that movie discussed during lunch at a rooftop restaurant of a department store in the famous Ginza distrct how they were going to "destroy" Ginza when the monster rampaged through. Somehow, somebody else at the restaurant overhead them, and when the producer and director tried to leave the store they were detained by the Tokyo Metro police for several hours! (Oops.)

I’ve had the original film (subtitled) for many years now.

This is just another high profile re-issue to synch up with the reboot (yawn another reboot).

There are also some theatrical screenings of the original planned this summer. The write up I saw claimed “unseen in America” footage. Don’t know if it is on my DVD or not.

I think Troma films has that crown now.
Which leads to the scary thought of a CGI Toxic Avenger.

The 1990s Jurassic Godzilla belongs in a locked box along with Space Jam and the Sgt. Pepper’s movie. Drop that box at the bottom of the ocean next to the Malaysian airliner.

The trailers DO look promising...the traditional ‘look’, the roar...but where’s the ‘atomic breath’?

I liked the one that had the giant turtle that flew with jet powered flames out its butt.

Bryan should simply feed the monster some of his famous blue meth.
