Firefighters were first alerted to the toxic substance around 12:45 p.m. Monday. Dozens of children had to be decontaminated as a precaution.

Firefighters say their monitors were able to pinpoint the substance to the school’s playground. Firefighters were not able to identify the source but they were able to rule out some other possible causes.

“District teams are in the process of washing the playground equipment and wiping down surfaces inside to ensure that the school is free of any residual pepper oil,” Reeves said. “The wood chips in the area where the peppers were found are being replaced.”

6 habaneros? You kiddin’ me? You would have to be up close because the air itself diffuses the effects. I could understand if they were in the class rooms.

But this is in Denver — no true American could ever be a Bronco fan.

Habeneros are HOT!

I do have a tip though, if you get any on your skin just wash it and put Benedryl cream and keep it dry.

If them dudes came to my house this morning after my dinner last night, they’d be busy for a month. I have to sign off now, need more TP and ice cubes.

Habaneros peppers are HOT!!!!! If someone did this as a prank it was cruel. These are little kids and if they got the juice on their hands and rubbed their faces and eyes they are going to be screaming!

It would be one thing if you were in your kitchen cutting up the peppers for sauce and got it on your skin. You would know where it came from but in this case I can understand the panic.

i once cooked 1/4 of a habanero, and choked my family out of our house... and we eat hot, spicy food... even our children do... a couple of weeks ago i cooked a serrano pepper (my favorite) and every time someone walked into the house, they started coughing... it was kind of funny :)

Peppers make me cough too. I assume these were outside. My husband will cut them outside. Peppers don’t burn his hands either, so he doesn’t use gloves, well that is until he forgot he cut peppers and later went to the bathroom.

Yep, he says that hurt! LOL

Reminds me of the time we were making hot oil for Chinese food (by heating pepper flakes in oil) and our Siamese cat started coughing.

Today it’s habanero peppers, tomorrow it’s innocent bell peppers.

i cooked my peppers in the house... i guess it is my method of cooking that does it... i cook them at a really high heat, quickly...

Yep, he says that hurt! LOL

I once ate a whole Serrano. I was literally shaking and tears were flowing.

It’s just a good thing they didn’t grow the Habanero’s in the shape of a gun.

Exactly my thoughts.

This was very cruel, and directed at children.

The hottest are either the Bhut Jalokia, tried it, (ferocious heat) or a new one I`ve never heard of called the Maruga Scorpion. I gotta try that one soon, before the panty waist brigade outlaws it “...because it burns!”.

was it raw? did you eat it by itself? i like to chop them up nice and tiny and throw them in scrambled eggs or omelets... and i include them in my guacamole... if i do not have any on hand, i use the hot yellow peppers from the jar--Mezzetta is the brand... i like the heat...

aye, aye, aye... but Serrano is my favorite, from heat to flavor to color, size and shape... cooked... or raw—if it’s diced...
