It would not be the first or last time a ship/ferry/boat was improperly loaded, “pack as much of ‘em in” kills....

If this is where google maps shows me it is the location is at the extreme southern end of S. Korea.

A cruise ship and ferry are not the same thing. Was this ferry rented as a party boat?

Not a party boat. Jejudo island is a very popular tourist area.

The 6,325-ton Sewol was heading to Jejudo Island from Incheon, sent out an emergency call early Wednesday.

The Coast Guard is reported to have arrived at the scene at about 8:50 a.m.

A passenger aboard the ship suggested that the ferry hit a reef due to thick fog. The meteorological office, however, said that the area was clear, with visibility of about 20 kilometers.

The passengers are reported to include about 350 students and staff of Danwon High School in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, who were traveling on a school trip to Jejudo Island. Including the crew and other passengers, 476 people are said to be aboard the vessel.

Well since everyone on board was rescued, I think I can say this without appearing crass:

“It eased into the water like an old man into a nice warm bath, no offense.”

I know. So it was a ferry of travelers on vacation and their version of Spring Break?
