Should Cats or Dogs Sleep in Bed with You? We Ask Vet Professionals What They Do
Vet Street via Yahoo! Shine ^ | 4/24/14 | Kristen Seymour

It's a topic so divisive that it has been known to be a significant factor in choosing a spouse: Do you let your pet sleep in your bed with you?

In some households, it's the norm. All pets are allowed everywhere, all the time. In others, it's no pets on any furniture, ever. But in many, the answer lies somewhere in between: Perhaps the cat or small dog is given a spot to snuggle, but the Great Dane has to remain on the floor.

Many factors come into play, of course. Some pet owners suffer from allergies and sleeping with a face full of fur only exacerbates them, or maybe they can't deal with the dirt a dog would track onto the duvet. But plenty of pet owners - and veterinary professionals - can't imagine drifting off to sleep without their kitty or Cocker Spaniel cuddled up nearby.

I make sure Jake’s rear is facing the other way.

Our Chihuahua Coco sleeps under the covers next to Mr. GG2. We hardly know she’s there except for the little dog snore. :-)

My best regards to Miss Hissy Slashy, which is by the way, the best cat nickname ever.

My cats snore like they’ve been smoking Cuban cigars. I have adapted.;-)

We shut ours in the bathroom at night.

If I did that, my cats would claw through 5 layers of drywall or 3 layers of plaster...just as a prelude as to what was about to occur.

That was the name that she gave herself after we adopted her. It only took four years of
loving kindness to turn her into Miss Purry Petme, and finally, Bobbie for her 4” tail.

She’s quite a sweetheart these days, and she loves getting pets and scritches.

Hail yes, we have bed dogs! Two Jack Russels on the bed, one Jack under the bed (he prefers that) and a big hound in the corner on her own bed.

No one is going to sneak up on us while we sleep. Our pups take care of that.

Reminds me of a T-shirt I saw => “My wife said to get rid of the dogs or she’ll leave... I sure miss her.”

My86 lb. Pitador sleeps with me but there’s no space for the 110 lb. Great Dane, who’ll inherit the Pitador’s place when the Pitador passes.

I had a Lab/ISetter cross who just got too hot trying to sleep with me on the bed. He deliberately slept on the cold, hard tile floor of the bathroom. My Pitador, OTOH, has established permanent Prescirptive Dog Rights to his place on the bed.

The lab and golden back in the day were allowed to sleep on a blanket next to the bed. They weren’t allowed on the bed. That doesn’t mean these retrievers always followed the rules.

BTW, a little off topic but... we are inheriting another cat this weekend. Not sure how to integrate the new one into the life of the household, as I’ve never had two before. Any advice from wise FReepers would be welcome. Our cat is about 10, male, declawed (was that way when we rescued it), and the new one is 5, female, with claws.

I don't think it will be too much trouble, one of them (probably the female) will establish his/her self as alpha kitty, and that will be that. Other freepers may offer different advice.
