I kid you not, I just read an article focusing on his playing Badminton with the North Waziri Taliban, becoming fluent in Dari and Pashto, and celebrating Easter and Christmas with them, while spending his time cooking and acquiring a taste for kawa, Afghan green tea. The claim there is that he was just lagging behind his patrol, was too slow and got caught.
Forget religious affiliation, consider the man’s loyalty potentially compromised, and keep him miles away from the military, and don’t treat him as a loyal soldier, end of story. The reality is this, the Taliban kills people they really consider the enemy. Al Qaeda kills Muslims regularly that they don’t consider Orthodox enough, and don’t mind the immense collateral damage they dished out for years in the Middle East. If they really considered him an enemy, even if he was a Muslim, they would kill him.
