So he was a private making $60,000/year?

I doubt they ever stopped his pay or benefits, anyway. The military would just keep direct-depositing month in/month out.

They are going to come up with some psycho-babble crap for his actions to get Obama off the hook for this idiotic trade. I heard he got yelled at for sleeping on duty. Probably use bullying as the cause for desertion. I know when I was in the service I was never yelled at.

This day in history 1966, Hurricane Alma kills 51 in Honduras.

Topping the charts on that date? When A Man Loves A Woman by Percy Sledge.

You are correct. they would not have stopped his pay and there would have been someone designated to receive those funds
don’t forget he also would have gotten combat and hazardous duty pay tax free

Splitting the $310K among the survivors of the six soldiers killed trying to rescue Bergdahl would be preferable to paying this apparent deserter.

Thanks for the info. It would be nice if 'real' journalists would do their job and clarify this point for the general public.

I shudder to think how all these details are affecting the families who have been permanently affected by the actions of Bowe Bergdahl and our CiC.

Each and every one of our patriotic soldiers and their families remain in my daily prayers.

Have they been sending his checks to his parents? Or does he get the lump sum like a lottery windfall? Inquiring minds want to know.

Another FReeper brought up, in the past day or two, something we are also overlooking.

HOW MANY U.S. troops died or became injured in the process of hunting down and capturing the 5 Taliban leaders released in trade for Bergdahl?

This action by 0bama to release them seems to add insult to injury for those in our military who were involved in nabbing the 5 in the first place.

I don't know about specifically designated to receive the funds, but they would have had access to them. Nobody deploys without setting up a POA. Unfortunately, sometimes the person they pick is less than trustworthy and cleans them out while they're deployed. Doesn't get reported much, but it happens.

GASP!

Thank you for posting that. We need to find out that info and add them to the victims list.

That is not a clear-cut question.

If they decide he left his post, there is still the issue of whether he was captured and held prisoner. If so, once he was captured, he had no opportunity to return to his duty.

If he had run off, and come back 3 days later, he would be disciplined, but may or may not have been courtmarshalled, and likely would have been paid until he was adjucated and removed from service.

That didn’t happen since he was captured.

Good points, but I would question if he was in fact "captured". He left voluntarily, possibly to join them. Thus was he 'captured' or did he get involved with something that he later regretted?
