A LGBTQ pride celebration at D.C.s Woodrow Wilson High School led to a big surprise for students Wednesday, as Principal Pete Cahall came out as gay in front of the crowd.
Cahall tells WNEWs Matt DelSignore that he just turned 50 and was tired of hiding.
I would be a hypocrite if I tell kids to be who you are and not be who I am, he said.
He admits that he was nervous at the thought of sharing his secret in front of hundreds of students. Before his announcement, his hands were shaking, he said.
But students were very supportive, responding with cheers and applause. Senior Aidan Parisi, who helped to organize Pride Day event, says a lot of jaws dropped, including his.
But, Parisi said, I was extremely proud of him for feeling comfortable to come out.
The notoriously anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church is planning a demonstration at the school on Monday. The groups website says its precisely because the school boasted that it would be the first public high school in the city, and maybe even the country, to host an LGBTQ pride event.
Wilson students are planning a counter-rally. Westboro Baptist Church is also planning several other demonstrations in the area in the coming days. The annual Capital Pride festival is also going on in D.C. through June 17.
Mayor Vincent Gray, who attended the high schools Pride Day, told reporters that the Westboro Baptist church can go straight to hell.
Of course they did. Any kid who didn't jump up and down with joy at the news would be ostracized, called "homophobic" or whatever. I wonder how many kids felt uncomfortable, but didn't dare say anything?
I remember years ago when Ellen Degeneres came out on her sitcom. Throughout the episode, she kept telling other characters she was gay and every time, the studio audience erupted in cheers and applause. I remember thinking then that impressionable young viewers might get the idea that coming out as gay would be like winning the lottery. You'd get attention, compliments, congratulations, and cheers...all while being considered "brave." I thought then that more kids might soon be coming out as gay as a result.
Same with this story. When the principal made his announcement and got cheers and applause as a result, how many kids thought, "Gee, that looks like a great way to get attention, sympathy and approval"?
in most cases..either will do!!
I saw a clip of this on my local early morning news show. I get to the point where I think I've seen it all, and there is nothing left that can sicken me to the point of having my head nearly explode, but I was wrong.
The crowd of kids erupted with cheers and applause; they've been brainwashed to believe it's just another kind of "love", and all love is wonderful. A few kids spoke on camera; their comments were,"I think he should be proud!" "If he's happy, I'm happy!" "I respect him even more now!"
Proud of WHAT? Respect WHAT? The fact that he is a feces-obsessed, mentally ill and morally depraved deviant?
// Kind of like Obama soaking up praise from a rent-a-crowd. Validation for the self-deluded is all about control, not about genuine agreement.//
So true! Stoking the pride doesn’t hurt, either.
